A bill to legalize same-sex marriage in New York State needed just one more vote to ensureits passage as of late Wednesday, and politicalobservers predicted it would pass by a one ortwo vote margin if Republican members of theState Senate allowed it to come up for a vote.The New York Assembly, which is controlledby liberal-leaning Democrats, has passed asame-sex marriage bill several times before andvoted again in favor of the measure 80-63 lateWednesday.With the legislature scheduled to adjourn forthe year on Monday, Democratic Gov. AndrewCuomo, a strong supporter of the measure, meton Wednesday with LGBT leaders and othersupporters to map out a last-minute game planfor pushing the bill through its final hurdle.Hopes by supporters that the hurdle wouldbe cleared on Wednesday were dashed whenGOP members of the Senate, who hold a 32-30 majority in the chamber, did not take anexpected caucus vote to allow the bill to comeup on the Senate floor for a debate and vote.Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos (R-LongIsland) told reporters in the state capital inAlbany that Republican senators would resumea discussion on the bill on Thursday. With the U.S. Capitol as a dramatic backdrop, tens of thousands of LGBT people and their friends and families jammed Pennsylvania Avenue on Sunday for the Districtof Columbia’s 36th annual Capital Pride Festival.One day earlier, D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray and 10members of the 13-member D.C. City Council joineddozens of LGBT groups, colorful floats, marching bands,and thousands of individual marchers in the annual CapitalPride Parade, which snaked its way along city streets linedwith thousands of spectators.Gray also spoke at Sunday’s festival before introducingthe day’s lead entertainer, Broadway actress and singerJennifer Holliday, who debuted her new single “Magic,”marking the song’s word premiere.Although city officials and police no longer provideofficial crowd estimates for large-scale events, CapitalPride organizers said they believe between 200,000 and250,000 people turned out for the parade and festival.“Everything was absolutely fantastic,” said Capital Pridespokesperson Scott Lusk. “All of our community partners andvolunteers and attendees showed up in great numbers andwith great enthusiasm.
