Intrduction
y A green building is one which uses less water,

optimises energy efficiency, conserves natural resources, generates less waste and provides healthier spaces for occupants, as compared to a conventional building." y They are more comfortable and easier to live with due to low operating and owning costs

Background
y Buildings have a significant impact on the

environment, consuming 32% of the world's resources, including 12% of its water and up to 40% of its energy. Buildings also produce 40% of waste going to landfill and 40% of air emissions.

What Makes a Building Green?

y A green building, is a structure that is designed,

built, renovated, operated, or reused in an ecological and resource-efficient manner. y Green buildings are designed to meet certain objectives such as protecting occupant health; improving employee productivity; using energy, water, and other resources more efficiently; and reducing the overall impact to the environment

GREEN BUILDING CRITERIONS

y Sustainable siting and design. y Green building materials. y Water efficiency. y Energy efficiency. y On-site power generation. y Indoor air quality.

SITE SELECTION
y y y y y y y

Use appropriate building sites Preserve open space Reduce sprawl Develop brown fields Safeguard endangered species Restore damaged environments Design to optimize sun, wind & light

SITE INTEGRATION
y Enhance naturally occurring biodiversity y Minimize site disturbance y Manage storm water y Optimize transportation options y Reduce heat islands y Reduce light pollution

The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) The CII is the central pillar of the Indian Green Building Council or IGBC

BUILDING RATING SYSTEMS

y 1. LEED`s (The Leadership in Energy and

Environmental Design y 2. TERI-GRIHA(The Energy and Resource InstituteGreen Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment)

What is

? LEED

y Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design y Rating system for developing high performance,

sustainable buildings y Voluntary, consensus-based, well recognized y Developed by US Green Building Council y Adapted by the Canada Green Bldg Council

Lead Certification
y There are 69 possible points and buildings can qualify y y y y

for four levels of certification: Certified - 26-32 points Silver - 33-38 points Gold - 39-51 points Platinum - 52-69 points

SOME EXAMPLES OF LEED CERTIFIED BUILDINGS

Raintree Hotels Chennai
y

Rajiv Gandhi International Airport

Nokia Gurgaon

The first Nokia facility to receive LEED Gold Certification was the China campus in Beijing

TERI green building rating system : TERI GRIHA

y National Rating System of India. y Suitable for all kinds of buildings in different climatic

zones of the country. y Will evaluate the environmental performance of a building holistically over its entire life cycle. y Currently the system has been developed to help design and evaluate only new buildings.

Benefits of Green buildings

y Reduced energy consumption without sacrificing the comfort levels y Reduced destruction of natural areas, habitats, and biodiversity, and reduced soil y loss from erosion, etc. y Reduced air and water pollution (with direct health benefits) y Reduced water consumption y Limited waste generation due to recycling and reuse y Reduced pollution loads y Increased user productivity y Enhanced image and marketability

Conclusions
y Green building is a much better product as compared

to conventional homes. Its good for your pocket book through much lower utility bills, good for your employer since healthy homes save on medical bills and sick leave, and you live with the knowledge that you are helping the earth.
