Remember when Shania Twain’s “Man! I Feel Like A Woman” hit?The swagger, the sass, theunbridled confidence. When thatopening lick heralded the song’sarrival to your car radio, the firstthing you did was reach for theknob to crank it all the way up!Lucy Angel has that same thrill-inducing, anthemic audio-euphoria .. . only times three!Kate, Lindsay and Emily have reallynailed it with this EP. They rock ashard as they sparkle. The openingtrack, “Serious,” kicks open thedoor to the saloon with a glitteringstiletto heel and demands yourattention. The vocals have a gutsy,no-nonsense air that glints with adevilish sense of fun. These galsaren’t staying in for a romanticevening, they’re going out andmaking headlines on TMZ!But don’t think Lucy Angel is awildfire that only burns hot and outof control. These women can sizzlewith a quiet intensity, too. There isfar more to this impressive familythan heat and attitude. “Color LoveBlue” is a bittersweet portraitrendered in a comforting wash of pastel vocal tones and soothingharmonies. Not to be overshadowed by thenatural beauty and raw talent of Lucy Angel, the songwriters delivertheir share of incredibility to thisproject, as well. The lyrics arecrisp, image-oriented phraseswhich deftly capture a mood whilepropelling the story ever forward.

, Young hasonce again employed hisimpressive wizardry for creatingvast soundscapes of lush washesaccentuated by delicate, glitteringtechno-curios to create even moreglorious tonal realms. “Alligator Sky” is a prime exampleof the magic on this album.Fantastic lyrical imagery meldswith a tumbling cavalcade of synthswells, blips, and a spine-bouncinggroove that is peppered with thesnap of Shawn Chrystopher’s rap.The warm, smile-inducingoptimism of “Honey And The Bee” creates a delightful escape. Theopening acoustic guitar line isstrengthened by a chime-like pianofigure in much the same way thetwo vocals on this trackcompliment each other. “January 28, 1986” will bring a chillto your flesh before it crossfadesinto the spirited, thump-thump and “da-da-da-da” of “Galaxies.” Another highpoint is “Deer In TheHeadlights.” There’s just enough
snark

Jennings has a strikingly rich andpowerful voice that rumbles deepand warm within her chest. Theiron-edge sharpness of her toneraises her melodies into the airwith a valiant beauty. “Cling To Me” awakens like a quietwhisper on Sunday morning andcrescendos into a passionatedeclaration of strength and asincere offering of self. At thechorus, Jennings’ vocals take flightand soar with a reassuring majesticgrace to create perhaps the mostpoignant moment on the album.Often, Jennings pens her lyricsmore like a novelist than asongwriter, opting to deliverprecise meaning with a complexstring of multisyllabic words ratherthan falling back on the “moon/ june” cliché. This practice allowsher to pack an incredible amount of details into her writing.Jennings vision of Dave Grohl’s “Everlong” is simply jaw dropping. You’d have to listen long and hardto find another cover (of any song)so impressively fresh and original, yet so absolutely true to the song.

is a stronger, more confident Jennings. Her pianois lush and her vocals reside in awonderful deep register that givesher songs guts and gusto.
