Project Summary
A Grumman Gulfstream III (G-III) busi-
ness jet has been modied and instru
-mented by NASA’s Dryden Flight Re-search Center to serve as a multi-rolecooperative research platform testbed
for a variety of ight research experi
-ments. The twin-turbofan aircraft pro-
vides long-term capability for efcienttesting of subsonic ight experiments for
NASA, the U.S. Air Force, other govern-ment agencies, academia, and privateindustry. The aircraft, which carried themilitary designation of C-20A, was ob-tained from the U.S. Air Force in 2003.NASA Dryden’s G-III is equipped with aself-contained on-board Data Collectionand Processing System (DCAPS). Thisembedded instrumentation system al-
lows for automated conguration setups
to reduce required engineering supportfor each mission. It includes primary andbackup systems to assure mission reli-ability, with the backup system availablefor use concurrently as a slave systemwhen needed. DCAPS is designed toallow easy upgrades, addition of add-on
systems for expansion, and to operate in
both autonomous and manual modes. The custom DCAPS system installedon the G-III was developed to enableprocessing, distributing, displaying and
archiving aircraft ight data and custom
ers’ experimental data in real time. In
addition, it features a video collectionand distribution system, satellite com-munications systems, including airborne
