SUMMARY
Development of self-regulation mechanism of the entire profession, in order to provide more comprehensive approach to the progress and preservation of journalistic ethics, essential responsibility to the general public and protection of the principles of freedom of speech, is a very complex and demanding process. On one hand, strict forms of censorship and monopoly over printed and broadcasted news had been overthrown, but, on the other hand, forming of truly independent media was blocked by the cunning forms of pressure. New freedom has brought new possibilities but also an insecurity to the journalists. Also, journalism has felt consequences of liberation because of the confrontation with the new, until then unknown, forms of pressure of the powerful elite, which in modern democratic society has the role of the overall controler. Changes in the media, similar to the ones in economy, have affected journalist’s operating environment, work conditions and place in society. Although journalists are no longer political servants (or they brokenly struggle not to be), they serve interests of the owner of the parent media. New contractors have appeared, that have no interest in journalism as a profession and lever of democracy, which did not contribute to the development of the media that serve citizens, especially in conditions of the glut on the market where publishers are fighting for relatively low number of readers.
Key words: self-regulation, freedom of speech, censorship, democracy
