Race for Life
On 18th May 2011 a groupo well-intentioned SUGARand BDAAT would bekeep t anatics went toCannon Hill Park to takepart in the ‘Race or Lie’.
Once we parked on the ocial car park,no one said it would be a hal mile walk tothe start o the race but we soldiered on.We were joined by other riendsrom inclusion and Addaction andpatiently awaited the start. Followingan energetic warm up to the zumba, the eager entrants had to have a restbeore the main event began.Joining over 2000 others the racebegan, with our ‘team’ soon makingup ground. A blistering 17 minuteslater the rst participant came pastthe nishing line, not bad or 5km. The rst o our group to nish wasChristine rom Inclusion in 44min.Most o our team nished therace in under an hour, whichwas a great achievement. The supporters gave all aresounding cheer and a good timewas had by all.Well doneto all whotook part inthe ‘Raceor Lie’ andthe moniesthey raised.Let’s seei we canbe biggerand betternext year.

Welcome to the rst editiono the Birmingham ServiceUser and Carer magazine.
Although it looks like it has been named‘SUGAR’, in act this is just a temporaryname or the magazine. Further downyou will see how you can be part o thisexciting new magazine, we are oering £40in Love2Shop vouchers or the best namesuggested or the magazine, details below.Inside this peer-led magazine you willnd powerul service user and carerstories; inormation about recent anduture events; useul and inormativeinormation about Birmingham’s treatmentand support options and much more.It has taken what seems like a lietimeto get to this point and the creation isthe culmination o hard work by serviceusers and carers across Birmingham. In September 2010 the BirminghamDrug and Alcohol Action Team (BDAAT)refected on their User Involvementprovision and came to realise that it wasvery limited. BDAAT took the decisionto enhance the service user and carerprovision by bringing together a group o service users who were interested in thedevelopment o involvement, which theylike to now call ‘active participation’.Following our months o hard work, therst ‘Birmingham Recovery Forum’ (BRF)was attended by about 35 service userswho took ownership and led on its uturedirection. Once the steering group was notneeded, it was dissolved with a view tocreating a pan-Birmingham User and CarerInvolvement Team. This team, now called ‘SUGAR’ (ServiceUser Group About Recovery) has in theew months o its existence assisted inthe continual growth and developmento BRF, which now has an averageattendance o 60 members; set upmultiple events, including Carers Day(Pampering Sessions), InternationalRemembrance Day, World Drugs Day –City Bus Tour (in partnership with BDAAT);and created this magazine which isonly part o the ever growing ‘recoverymovement’ happening in Birmingham. We hope you enjoy the very rst edition o this magazine, created ‘by service usersand carers or service users and carers’.I you wish to contribute an article orstory; inormation or poem; recipe oranything you think has relevance to theservice user and carer community, thenplease email hob.brsu@nhs.net with thesubject ‘newsletter’ or phone the SUGARInvolvement Team on 0121 465 4936.
