Interested in a community garden plot in your neighbourhood? We need your feedback!

The Tono Community Food Initiative (TCFI) has been asked to consider assisting the District of Tonos Parks and Recreation Department in creating Tonos rst community garden in the Lone Cone Neighbourhood. The TCFI hosted a neighbourhood meeting at the end of April to answer questions and gauge interest. Based on feedback, we are proceeding to the next step, which is to determine if there would be enough people interested in renting plots if a community garden were created. Where will the garden be?
The proposed garden will be in the Bert Demeria Memorial Park, on a section that fronts Lone Cone Rd, adjacent to the current lane way.

Will the garden impact the playground and eld?


No space will be taken away from these projects, and the garden will be fenced.

How big is a plot?


Each plot will be a 4 x 10 cedar box lled with soil.

How much will it cost?

Plot rental will be ~$75-$100/year to cover costs, water and maintenance.

What can I grow?


Food: veggies and culinary herbs. No fruit (to avoid attracting bears). Flowers can also be grown amongst veggies and herbs to attract bees and for beauty.

Is composting permitted?
Only of garden waste, not food waste.

Will there be rules?


Yes. Each tenant will be required to adhere to a Code of Conduct that ensures a cooperative and safe atmosphere in the garden, and respects that the garden is in a neighbourhood and adjacent to a playground and eld.

Who will set up the rules and ensure they are followed?
A garden committee set up with assistance from the TCFI will establish rules and a code of conduct. It will also ensure adherence to these rules and code.

What if I dont know how to garden?


The TCFI will provide support and instruction for new gardeners as needed.

When can I start?


Plots are anticipated for early 2012.
