Server 2007 Public Beta
Documentation Roadmap
The Microsoft® Office Communications Server 2007 Public Beta documentation set provides the
information you need to plan, install, configure, and manage a full deployment for Public Beta.
This Documentation Roadmap is your guide to finding the information that you want without
having to search each and every document. This roadmap also recommends how you can use the
documentation to facilitate your deployment.
This documentation roadmap provides the following information:
• A summary of the contents of each document.
• Recommendations for using the Office Communications Server 2007 Public beta
documentation to simplify and expedite your deployment.
• Where to find information on specific topics.

Documentation Overview: What Each Guide

Contains
The Office Communications Server 2007 Public Beta documentation set covers the topics that
the product team has determined are essential for successful deployment. The documentation set
does not cover features that might be available in subsequent releases but are unavailable in the
Public Beta. Moreover, some scenarios, configurations, and optimizations that are recommended
in the Public Beta documentation may change with future releases. Most of the guides in the
Public Beta documentation set should be read by anyone who plans to deploy Office
Communications Server 2007. A few of the guides apply to specific deployment scenarios and
can be ignored if they do not apply to your organization.
Table 1summarizes the contents and primary audiences for all the guides in the Public Beta
documentation set. For information on the order in which you might read the documentation, see
Recommendations for Using the Office Communications Server 2007 Public Beta
Documentation.

Recommendations for Using the Office

Communications Server 2007 Public Beta
Documentation
You can use the Office Communications Server 2007 Public Beta documentation set to preview
the product as well as deploy it in both lab and production environments. The three following
topics recommend which documents to read, depending on your objectives.

What to Read for a Quick Overview

If you are looking for a quick overview of the features and underlying technologies of Office
Communications Server 2007 Public Beta without installing the product, read:
• Office Communications Server 2007 Technical Overview
If you also want to learn more about planning and deployment requirements, read:
• Office Communications Server 2007 Planning Guide

What to Read for a Quick and Simple Lab Deployment

If you want to deploy Office Communications Server 2007 in a simple lab environment to
preview or demonstrate features such as IM and conferencing, read:
• Office Communications Server 2007 Standard Edition Deployment Guide.

What to Read for a Production Deployment

If you want to deploy Office Communications Server 2007 Public Beta in a production
environment, the documents you need to read depend on your particular infrastructure and
Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 Documentation Roadmap 5
requirements. The following discussion recommends reading the Office Communications Server
2007 Public Beta documentation in a sequence that is appropriate to the requirements and
characteristics of your particular deployment and infrastructure. Other approaches can also be
used, of course, but the ones recommended below will help you decide what will work best for
you.
The Office Communications Server 2007 Public Beta documentation can be divided into three
broad groups according to whether they are meant to be read before deployment, during
deployment, or after deployment.
Read These Documents Before You Deploy Office
Communications Server 2007 Public Beta
1. To learn about known issues and their resolution, read the Microsoft Office
Communications Server 2007 (Public Beta) Release Notes.
2. If you are unfamiliar with the new features and technologies in Office Communications
Server 2007, first read the Office Communications Server 2007 Technical Overview. This
“big-picture” guide will acquaint you will the new features in this release and the underlying
architecture of the product.
3. Everyone deploying Office Communications Server 2007 Public Beta is urged to read the
Office Communications Server 2007 Planning Guide before beginning deployment. The
Planning Guide discusses the technical, infrastructural, business, and legal requirements that
directly impact basic deployment decisions. This guide includes detailed information on such
important topics as supported topologies, administration models and permissions, DNS and
certificate requirements, external user support, data storage solutions, platform requirements,
and migration and coexistence scenarios, among others. This is the one must-read guide
regardless of the size or requirements of your organization.
4. If you plan to leverage the enterprise voice capabilities of Office Communications Server,
read the Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 (Public Beta) Unified
Communications Enterprise Voice Planning and Deployment Guide.
5. To familiarize yourself with the new features of Office Communicator 2007 (Public Beta),
you should read the What’s New with Microsoft Office Communicator 2007 (Public Beta).
6. To familiarize yourself with the new features of Office Communicator 2007 (Public Beta),
you should read the Microsoft Office Live Meeting 2007 (Public Beta) Getting Started
Guide.
7. If you have special requirements for your deployment, you may want to read one of the
following guides:
• If you are migrating from an existing Live Communications Server 2005 with SP1
deployment, read Migrating to Office Communications Server 2007. Side-by-side
migration is the only upgrade scenario supported by Office Communications Server
2007 Beta 3. This guide examines coexistence issues and provides step-by-step
instructions for performing a side-by-side upgrade. The recommendation is to read this
guide both before you begin and then during deployment in conjunction with the
deployment guides described below.
6 Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 Documentation Roadmap
• If you administer the Active Directory® Domain Services for your organization, or if
you just want to more fully understand how the Active Directory works with Office
Communications Server 2007, read Office Communications Server 2007 Active
Directory Guide: Preparing Active Directory, Delegating Setup and Administration,
and Active Directory Schema Reference.
• If you are deploying Office Communications Server 2007 in a multiple-forest
environment, be sure to read Deploying Office Communications Server 2007 in a
Multiple Forest Environment before and in conjunction with the deployment guides
listed below.
Read These Documents When You Are Ready to Begin
Deployment . . .
1. When you are ready to deploy use the Office Communications Server 2007 Active
Directory Guide.
2. If you are deploying Standard Edition, follow the procedures in the Microsoft Office
Communications Server 2007 Standard Edition Deployment Guide.
3. If you are deploying Enterprise Edition — either Consolidated Configuration or Expanded
Configuration — follow the procedures in the Office Communications Server 2007
Enterprise Edition Deployment Guide.
4. If you are going to support external users for remote access, federation, or conferencing,
follow the procedures in the Office Communications Server 2007 Edge Server Deployment
Guide.
5. If you are deploying Archiving and CDR Server, follow the procedures in the Office
Communications Server 2007 Beta3 Archiving and CDR Server Deployment Guide.
6. If you are deploying Enterprise Voice, you should read Microsoft Office Communications
Server 2007 Enterprise Voice Planning and Deployment Guide.
7. When you are ready to roll out the Microsoft Office Communicator 2007 client to end users,
you should read the Communicator 2007 Testing and Troubleshooting Guide and the
Communicator 2007 Deployment Guide.
8. When you are ready to roll out the Microsoft Office Live Meeting 2007 client to end users,
follow the procedures in the Deploying the Microsoft Office Live Meeting 2007 Client with
Office Communications Server 2007.
Read These Documents After Deployment
1. To provide end users with Microsoft Office Communicator 2007 documentation, direct them
to the Microsoft Office Communicator 2007 Getting Started Guide and the Microsoft
Office Communicator 2007 Quick Reference Cards.
2. To provide end users with documentation for the Live Meeting 2007 client, direct them to
the Microsoft Office Live Meeting 2007 Getting Started Guide.
