1.0 INTRODUCTION

This plan presents the d e s c r i p t i o n of and requirements f o r the first full -s cale instrumented t e s t vehicle deployment flight test. The major t e s t emphasis will be the evaluation of t h e Paraglider deployment s equence.
W h e n all subsysterns have been installed, the following special t e s t s w i l l be conducted on the f u l l - s c a l e t e s t vehicle (FSTV):

Live Squib T e s t .

T h i s test w i l l be conducted a t Edwards Air F o r c e Base. It w i l l consist of a s i m u l a t e d flight on battery power, during w h i c h a l l pyrotechnic devices except the M D F r i n g arid aft r e s t r a i n t cutters w i l l b e f i r e d . Monitoring for e l e c t r i c a l noise i n t e r f e r e n c e w i l l b e accomplished.

Extraction T e s t .

This t e s t w i l l be conducted at t h e Downey, California, plant. It w i l l consist of the extraction of the Paraglider from the R&R cani'stes, the inflation of the Paraglider, and b o o m and keel trailing edge release
{no apex r e l e a s e ) .

The f l i g h t will c o n s i s t of launch from the USAF C -130 carrier aircraft, separation of t e s t vehicle f r o m the launch sled, timer initiation of Paraglider deployment, transition t o initial glide, Paraglider jettison, and initiation of recovery parachute deployment.

Systems operation w i l l b e telemetered to ground stations for recording. Photographic coverage of the t e s t will b e provided by bn-board cameras, by the photo-chase aircraft, and by mobile tracking station cameras on the lakebed. Space position and velocity information w i l l be provided by groundbased range instrumentation.

Accuracy w i l l be +25-foot slant range. The data will be presented i n t a b u l a r form, and also on IBM punched cards.
5.2

VELOCITY

A c c u r a c y w i l l b e *2 fps. The data will b e presented in tabular f o r m , and also on IBM punched cards.

5.3 WEATHER
The d i r e c t i o n and velocity of winds aloft from 3000 feet MSL to launch altitude at 1000-foot i n t e r v a l s are required. These weather observations will b e made twice, not more than 1 hour before scheduled launch and not m a r e than 1 hour after flight.

Surface wind direction and velocity are required.

The temperature from surface to launch altitude at 1000-foot intervals

is required.

5.4

PHOTOGRAPHIC COVERAGE

On-Board

The test vehicle w l be equipped with one high-speed c a m e r a (100 fps), il Camera No. 2 , t o record deployment and transition-to -glide. T h e r e a l s o will be two low-speed (16 f p s ) cameras, Cameras No. 1 and 3 ; one of thesewill view the spreader b a r and the other w i l l be oriented to provide a view of the apex fitting during the deployment sequence. On-board photographic raw stock film w i l l be supplied b y S & I D / N A A . The processing and delivery of this film w i l l be accomplished as specified in Table 2.
