Dear Reader,
For months, I’ve been telling anyone willing to listen that the statistics anddata to watch are not unemployment, but rather small businesses, their trendsand patterns. Another way to say it is, let’s watch the underemployment in ourcommunity. Those numbers are improving, new businesses are opening, andwe are seeing small, but noticeable positive trends. Now, how do we keep the momentum going? On August 25, 2011, J
ewishB2BNetworking

“But, I’ve got an MBA!” “I have over 25 years of experience.”“Give me a chance to interview.” Sound familiar?Frustration and anger doesn’t begin to express your feelings, andyou’re absolutely certain your age is the obstacle. You’ll never trulyknow why you didn’t get that job, but being over 40 could be amajor factor.

This is the time to consider other professions where your skill set canbe effectively applied. Be realistic. Identify your unique strengths.Remember, perception is the name of the game.Hiring managers, young enough to be your children, even yourgrandchildren, might be uncomfortable managing someone older. They may feel that you aren’t technologically savvy, your look isoutdated, or your salary expectations too high. PROVE THEMWRONG!!Put younger hiring mangers at ease while speaking with you. It’sdifcult interviewing with someone substantially younger, but watchyour attitude – don’t appear defensive or condescending. Dressprofessionally. Let them know you’re current with technology andchanges in your profession. Do your research about any companyyou’re considering. Take courses on popular software most compa-nies use (Excel, Power Point, Outlook).Your resume needs to be strong, concise and current. Going back30 years screams older employee. Your resume shouldn’t exceedtwo pages -- the single page resume is no longer standard. There areseveral resume styles; nd one that makes you a “rock star.” Includeachievements and skills directly relevant to the job you’re seek-ing. If you’ve had training/courses more recently than your collegedegrees, list them rst.Learn today’s most frequently asked interview questions and be pre-pared to be caught off guard. Mention jobs where you’ve had greatrapport with both younger and older workers. Show your willingnessto learn from anyone. Focus on what you bring to the table. Have aspring in your step when you walk into the room and make sure yourhandshake is rm and condent. When discussing salary, put the ball in their court. Ask what they’reoffering, give ranges as opposed to concrete numbers, demonstrateexibility and most important, don’t emphasize the salary itself.Their benet package (insurance, sick leave, vacation) can add up.And, check RetiredBrains.com, Senior Job Bank, com., Retirement- jobs.com.
