The briefing book prepared for National Security Adviser Henry A. Kissinger's historic secret trip to China in July 1971. On page 62 of this document (the 5th page of the section on the Vietnam War) Kissinger scribbled, "We want a decent interval. You have our assurance." Historian Jeffrey Kimball discovered this handwritten note in 2001 and recognized it as further evidence that President Richard M. Nixon adopted a "decent interval" exit strategy for Vietnam that was intended to postpone, not prevent, Communist military victory.
