South Pannonia travel

on the sunny side of life
To us, Hungarians, being in South Pannonia is always a unique experience. This is where spring arrives first and where the autumn sunshine warms our bodies and souls the longest, in the entire country. Even in November, we can be sitting on city caf terraces in short sleeves; and fig ripens in our gardens three times a year. Big city tourists find the tiniest villages in our region; while visitors from the Great Plain appreciate our wild romantic mountains and caves. One of the cleanest rivers in Europe, the Drava marks the countrys boarder here and we are proud of the nature protected national park area of the river and the Gemenc forest, the largest near-to-natural state forest on its floodplain. Hospitality is not a necessary business practice here but a tradition of many centuries. This is the region where the most and largest nationalities of Hungary live together, and our Mecsek mountain is the cradle of Hungarian village tourism. If we were to close the tastes and aromas of South Pannonia into a box, we definitely would place Szekszrd and Villny wines in it first. This region had been blessed with great potential. Each of the wines growing here carries the taste of sunshine, yet we would recommend you to taste the regions typical wines first: Kadarka and Bulls Blood (bikavr) from Szekszrd, Blue Portuguese (kkoport) from Villny and Cirfandli from Pcs! Next to them, we would put almond blooming here first in the country every year -, fruits and berries from the forests of the Mecsek and chestnut into the box. These would be followed by the fish of the Danube and the Drava; the game of the Gemenc and the Zselic; and the melon of Ormnsg that taste so sweet and fruity like nothing else. And let us not forget the honey you can find in so many tiny villages in South Pannonia and the goat cheese, different in form and taste in every farmers house. The vast majority of the regions healing and thermal baths has been renovated completely in the past few years. Besides wellness, our region is the first to offer services in selfness, a trend aimed at creating a harmony of spirit, body and soul. Many guests are searching for the traditional ways of keeping balance: to enjoy the magic of nature riding the bicycle or riding the horse. It is no accident that Pcs and its vicinity will be the home to the Orienteering World Championship in 2011; that the worlds manifold strongest Iron Man is of Bonyhd origin; and that the very best sportsmen and sportswomen of numerous water sports come from here. We live in healthy, natural, picturesque surroundings with a sub-Mediterranean climate where time elapses slower and where we can delight in the taste of fantastic wines. Be a part of this feeling, live and enjoy life on the sunny side, in South Pannonia! Zsuzsanna Hegyi Regional marketing director

this octagonal grave you approach the Pitcher Grave. Its name derives from the painted pitcher and glass depicted in the small recess in the northern wall of what was once a barrel vaulted tomb. In the same square stands the early christian mausoleum (2), the largest two-storey funeral The historical city centre of Pcs boasts the richest collection of Roman remains in all of Central Europe and in light of this was added to the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites in 2000. Within a few hours you may learn of the sacred world of the Roman Christian community. The entrance to cella septichora Visitors centre (1) can be found amongst the chestnut trees lining Saint Stephens Square, where you enter the seven-foiled chapel from which the name derives, and step back into the past. The entrance boasts building, under the site of what was once a series of water steps. Its walls are decorated with scenes from the Old Testament. In the exhibition even a sarcophagus can be viewed. Below nr. 8 and 14 Apca street (3), you may find a cemetery chapel and a double grave with painted walls; while walking a little further down Jkai street you may find the remains of a Romanperiod dwelling and the apses of the attached three-nave bath in the rmai court (4).

If you are hungry we recommend: Pezsghz Restaurant (5)

(12 Szent Istvn Square)

In one of the best cuisines in Pcs you can experience the harmonic combination of local and traditional tastes and the highlevel knowledge of international gastronomic trends. This is also the best

place to try Pcsmade champagne, too! If you need accommodation we recommend: Hotel Arkadia (6)
(1 Hunyadi road)

an unusual glass-concrete gateway, which reveals its true beauty in the dark, making a nighttime walk worthwhile. It is a unique experience to walk on the monumental glass roof covering the underground layer of Roman remains. On the walls of Peter and Paul Grave you can view period depictions of the Apostles. Following

The inner architecture and the colours of the hotel were inspired by the clean tracing of the Bauhaus. Even though the there are only two storeys, each point of the hotel can be easily accessed by an elevator. Take a look at the convenient and stylish rooms and choose the one you like most.

Just a few paces from here you can find the mosque of Jakovali Hassan pasha (3), which has remained intact along with its minaret operating even today as a place of worship. It is unusual in the way in which its outstanding acoustics were ensured by building jugs into its walls. You can spend the whole day in the Turkish era. The keel-arch windows of the Turkish architecture may still be seen in the church of saint Augustus (4) in goston Square. On Rkus Hill, in the picturesque garden of the Childrens Clinic, you may find the Grave (trbe) of idrisz Baba (5), one of the most precious examples of Turkish architecture in our country.

If you are hungry we recommend: Kalamris Restaurant (6)

(30 Rkczi road)

Taste, style and quality a fitting description for this restaurant, where gastronomy and arts meet in a harmonious fusion. The chef is always at top of his game.

It is best to begin your walk at the largest Muslim temple in Central Europe, the mosque of Gazi Kassim pasha (1). In what today is a Catholic church, you may see fine calligraphic quotations from the Koran, a prayer recess in the south-eastern wall pointing towards Mecca (the mihrab), and a period container for holy water. Walking along one of the towns most beautiful pedestrian zones Ferencesek Street, you approach the remains of the Baths of memi Pasha (2). You may only imagine the pomp of the formerly vaulted building on the basis of the extant partial reconstruction.

If you need accommodation we recommend: Ptria Hotel (7)

(3 Rkczi road)

The modern three-star hotel belonging to the Danubius Hotels chain is situated in the historical town centre right by the Mosque of Jakovali Hassan pasha. Enjoy the unique view from the rooms balconies over the city centre and the Mecsek Mountains.

If you are hungry, we recommend: Dm Restaurant

(3 Kirly Street)

The restaurants inner architecture forms a small model of the Cathedral. Its traditional cuisine is enjoyed and appreciated by locals and tourists alike. If you need accommodation, we recommend: Hotel Millennium (4)
(58 Klvria Street)

After multiple reconstructions the Cathedral features clear Neo-Romanesque style today. In the side chapels paintings by Bertalan Szkely and Kroly Lotz may be viewed. During his visit to Pcs, Pope John Paul II raised the Cathedral to the status of Basilica Minor in 1990. The sculptural memories of the building, such as the reliefs on the stairs leading down to the crypt, may be found in the adjacent cathedral museum and Lapidary (2). Next to the cathedral, walkers-by may be surprised by a modern sculpture depicting Franz Liszt on a balcony of the Bishops Palace. Walking a little further you may find the collection of Bishop Gyrgy Klim in Szepessy Ignc Street,

one of the richest sources of Hungarian and European cultural history. Pilgrims should not miss out on a visit to Mriagyd, the famous Maria pilgrimage visited by Croatians, Germans and Hungarians from across the world; and mecsekndasd, the birthplace of St. Margaret, the legendary queen of Scotland from the 11th century.

A high-standard, modern hotel with a nice garden, an outdoor swimming pool and spellbinding view on the Cathedral and the city centre situated on the south side of Calvary Hill in a nature protected area - in the very heart of Pcs.

Faculty of Arts outside of Budapest can be found here, too; furthermore, the quarter for children attracts small and big ones with performances and puppet-making workshop secrets of Bbita Puppet Theatre. The oeuvre of the Zsolnay factory may be studied in the city centre, in Zsolnay museum (2) (2 Kptalan Street). One of the finest examples of public sculptures of the factory is the bulls-head Zsolnay fountain (3). The faade of county Hall (4) (9 Szchenyi Square) on the main square, the symbols of the former savings bank are still present in the ceramic work. It is only a few steps from here to the Zsolnay boutique (5) (2 Jkai Street). Factory owner Vilmos Zsolnay, who was to become a symbol of creativity and innovation, won many of the most important prizes at trade fairs and exhibitions, thanks to his technological and artistic ingenuity; from Vienna to Torino and Paris to California. Today fashion designer Katti Zob is designing jewellery based on Zsolnay eosin that have been introduced in London with great success; furthermore, todays designers in Pcsare re-discovering eosin and using it in form of buttons and patterns on their latest models. Eosin is the name given to a kind of reduction glaze. After applying the metal glazes and firing, the vessel takes on an iridescent metallic lustre. One of the major investments of the program Pcs2010 European Capital of Culture was the Zsolnay cultural Quarter (1) on 35,000 m2 on the premises of the current Zsolnay ceramics factory. Besides exhibitions and workshops connected to the founding familys and the factorys history and spirit, you may find the most outstanding, historic and Art Nouveau objects in the Gyugyi collection a private assortment of Zsolnay ceramics brought back to Hungary from the USA. Hungarys only The Pcs national Theatre (6) (1 Sznhz Square) stands in the main pedestrian zone in Kirly (King) Street, with its modern ceramic frieze. A little further along the Neo-Renaissance decoration of the Vasvry House (7) (19 Kirly Street) is worthy of a note, while one street further down stands the so-called csuks House (8) (14 Perczel Street). You must not miss the listed szerecsen Pharmacy (9) (1 Apca Street), the Post Palace (10) (10 Jkai Street), the Tke-fountain (11)opposite of it, and the 100 year-old Zsolnay memorial sculpture (12) in the junction of Szabadsg Road and Rkczi Road, which can all be explored within one walk in the city centre. A little further away from the centre, the former Vasvry Villa (13) at 44 Jurisics Street (today the regional centre of the Hungarian Academy of Science) on the side of Mecsek Hill is a sight you do not want to miss.

If you are hungry and looking for accommodation: Hotel Palatinus (14) (5 Kirly Street) The listed building belonging to the Danubius Hotels chain is located in the heart of the city in the pedestrian zone. Its Art Nouveau style employs notable decoration with Zsolnay ceramics. Pcs is proud to welcome you in its beautiful restaurant, foyer, reception and large ballroom.

Modern Zsolnay works may also be found in the Zsolnay Room of the citycentre Restaurant Aranykacsa (4 Terz Street).

Rippl-Rnai) and The Eights (Pr, Czbel etc.), followed by the Avant-Garde artists of the 1920s (e.g. Moholy-Nagy) and the Szentendre School. Its yard hosts the stone Garden by Pierre szkely (4). Another building of the museum is located in Papnvelde Street presenting a collection from the second half of the 1950s. Pcss world of arts is determined by the remarkably high number of contemporary artists living and working here. The most imposing building of the citys main square in the former Hotel Ndor, today ndor Gallery (5) (15 Szchenyi Square) provides place for the citys various contemporary art groups to introduce themselves. In its neighbourhood you will find a design shop by Pcs artists with unique interior decoration. Besides various contemporary arts exhibitions, you will find a shop with special atmosphere and ethno-antique objects in Parti Gallery (6) (1 Mria Street).

If you are hungry, we recommend: Enoteca CORSO (7)

This Pcs prestige restaurant was listed amongst the top ten restaurants in Hungary. In the same place, on the ground floor, the Bistro ZONA offers simple, adorable dishes of highest gastronomic quality at everyday prices. You can find the citys most extensive wine list here.

The display in Pcs covers the early Bauhausinfluenced period and ranges from the analyticalgeometrical graphics to the architectonic Op-art works, covering almost his entire oeuvre. Also the world-famous Zebra works can be viewed here. In the neighbouring Janus Pannonius Street, you may find the museum of the solitary giant of Hungarian painting, Tivadar Kosztka csontvry (2) (11 Janus Pannonius Street). Csontvry was one of the most significant advocates of plen-air painting, creating such works as the Lonely Cyp-ress and the Greek Theatre in Taormina. The artists career lasted fifteen years, the number of his works barely exceeds hundred, yet he is one of the most significant representatives of modern painting. His art has lifted him amongst the universal artists of the Post-Impressionist movement. The modern Hungarian Art museum (3) (4 Kptalan Street) gives an excellent overview on the works by the founders of Nagybnya School, by outstanding artists of the turn of the century (e.g.

If you need accommodation, we recommend: Corso Hotel Pcs**** (6)

(8 Koller Street)

The 16-years-old Kzelts Artistic Association consists of former and recent students of the only art faculty in Hungary outside of Budapest. Besides their own projects they introduce artworks by young artists from abroad as well as latest international artistic movements on various venues such as empty city centre shops. Founded in 1811, the Pannon Philharmonic orchestra has played a determining rule in the music culture of South Pannonia for the past 200 years. Listening to their concert in the Kodly Centre, built in 2010 within the Pcs European Capital of Culture program, with thousand seats and fantastic acoustics, is truly a unique experience. Pcs theatre life owes its significant rule in provincial Hungarian theatre to Pcs national Theatre, Third Theatre (Harmadik Sznhz), Janus university stage, Bbita Puppet Theatre and professional-level private groups such as mrkus Theatre (MrkusZnhz).

Harmony and elegance. Pcss newest hotel has opened its doors for its guests in May 2010. It is unique for the artworks of local contemporary artists on the rooms walls.

The nearly 50,000 ha area of Danuba-Drava National Park is located along the Danube PCS from the mouth of Si channel until the Hungarian boarder, and includes the entire Drava area in Hungary. The floodplain of Drava, its tributaries and dead branches are accompanied by gallery forests. There are more than 50 fish species living in the clear waters of the river. The sandy and pebbly Drava riverbanks are popular resting and nesting places for birds. The reeds are home to populous heron, quawk, and little aigrette colonies while the forests foliate hides nests of black storks and ospreys. The Drava Kapu Visitors Centre in Drvaszentes introduces the natural and cultural treasures of the protected areas, such as traditional Hungarian domestic animals on a demonstrating farm. Why not renting a bike and making a bicycle tour in this plain, yet beautifully manifold landscape? Upon preliminary registration, groups will be awaited with traditional flavours and warm meals. You can find a great number of splendid thermal baths near the Drava. Let us recommend you nagyatd (1) with its traditional medicinal bath and the most charming thermal beach of the re-

The picturesque, untouched floodplain of Gemenc along the Danube is the home to such exclusive, protected animals as kingfisher, osprey, black stork and lanner. Gemenc is popular among professional and amateur nature photographers for its famous and outstanding stock of deer and wild boar. The area is weaved through and through with grades, partly natural, narrow channels that had been used to secure the flooding of the inner plains to thus help the living of the forest and the farmers working in it. Feel free to visit Gemenc on marked tourist and nature trails! If you go on a canoe tour on the Old Danube with the national parks rangers, you may even be lucky to see traces of beaver gnawing in the forests. The lower part of the Danube in Hungary, Bda-Karapancsa, is among the most densely inhabited areas of the country, as far as ospreys and black storks are concerned. In the depths of the floodplain forests water birds live their undisturbed lives; its gallery forests are home to numerous protected water flowers. Klked is the touristic centre, the starting point for guided tours whether on foot, by bike, on water or on horseback. The White Stork Museum in Klked introduces you to the worlds storks, their migrant routes, feeding habits and the way to ring them. In Bta, a civilian foundation runs a Black Stork Museum full of adventures.

You can truly feel the spirit of the Middle Ages in the old town, where 8 craftsmen earn their daily living; families, friends and foes live their everyday lives (watch the drunken tailor being hunted down the alleys by his growling wife); and farces bring a smile on your face. There are fascinating performances held on Birds Stage and Knights Stage in the morning and in the afternoon hours. In exchange for Bikal Pennies, anyone can put their strength and skilfulness on the test in the disciplines javelin throwing, archery and star throwing. At the end of the day, we shall arrange a surprise ceremony for the best of the best, who is to become King Matthias with some very special rights for his special day. Are you longing to enjoy an activity day with your children and friends? The mecsextrm Adventure Park in Pcs is the best place to go! As already shown in their symbol (a rabbit shouting like a lion), even the most shy ones shall soon be in the mood to play here. Plenty of exciting activities are waiting for young and old: an alpine ropeway, summer bob track, zorb, Tyrolean slide, a playhouse, pedalled go-kart, a 40 m-long adventure castle, a

9 m-high triple slide, trampoline, rope pyramids, a professional climbing wall (separate tracks for beginners and advanced climbers), shooting, x-jump, a rodeo bull, riding possibilities, and many more. Fast and tasty snacks in Tepsifles Restaurant help satisfy the hunger of each and every rabbit - that became a lion.

The Katica farm in Patca (3) is an Active Recreation Centre aiming at popularizing a child-centred, close-to-nature, traditional lifestyle. You can choose between fifty various programs from handcrafts to nature studies, from traditional to farming activities. Dozens of outdoor and indoor games, a giant multiple-storey log castle, a frolic barn, a two-storey game house, an obstacle track and a stone catapult are waiting for the visitors. You can become acquainted with traditions and know-how of our forefathers by learning how to milk a cow, bake bread and langallo, ride horses or by putting your strength and courage to the farmers test. On the weekends the so-called Illustrious Days offer programs on given occasions for the entire family. You may also find accommodation here, whether you come with your family or with a group of friends.

In todays world it is a true blessing to feel time slowing down, our heavy problems fading away and the human sides of life open up instead. The Orf valley is exactly this kind of place. Peace, happiness, fresh air and beautiful nature as far as the eye can see. Orf (1) is a true centre for longer active holidays with its human-sized and high-standard aqua park at one lakeshore; and with the sandy, green beach at the other lake; with its qualified riding schools, extreme cave tours, marked hiking forest trails, water sports centre, and its operating water mill. Orf has established its good reputation with its Wild Garlic Festival, Oven Days, Fishing on Orf alternative festival and National Childrens Riding Days. In Abaliget (2), the national park has established a Bat Museum on the shore of the rowing lake close to the dripstone cave, a certified place of healing. Kovcssznja (3) and Husztt (4) are undisturbed, lovely, lively little villages living their natural lives on the shore of a fishing lake system. The thermal bath in magyarhertelend (5), in the depth of the Mecsek forests, had been extended and renovated and is now awaiting its guests in the summer- and in the wintertime. Only a few kilometres and perhaps fifteen minutes from Pcs lays sikonda (6). Due to the negative ions dominance in the air, the valley has a unique micro climate having a calming effect on the organism. The annual average temperature here is

3-5 0C lower than the national standard. Relative air humidity is high with mean 60-80% it is dust-, germ- and smoke-free, which can be put down to the extended forests in the area. Alterations in air pressure are relatively low, which also contributes to this excellent climate. The spa built in 1928 had been renovated on basis of the feng shui principles a couple of years ago. Today it is the Sikonda Wellness Hotel*** and Bath.

M6 Pcsvrad (1) is located at the foot of Zeng (682 m), the highest 56 peak of Mecsek mountain. It is one of the most ancient settlements of the country with a particularly rich history. The Pcsvrad Castle had been founded as a Benedictine cloister by state founder King St. 51 Stephen. Its first abbot Asztrik brought the crown for Stephen, who introduced Christianity to the country, from Rome. Most valuable part of the castle is its chapel from the 11th century with its remaining MOHCS frescoes forming the oldest memories of fresco arts Byzantine style.

bnya (4) (original name: Alte Glashtte) is certainly one of the most picturesque villages in the region. This nature protected area is the largest protected area in the Mecsek. Its main attraction is the valley and the brook between bnya and Kisjbnya, the most charming hiking route in the East-Mecsek. bnya is famous for its pottery collection that attracts many visitors. For a good meal or a good night sleep, do not hesitate to knock on the neat equestrian guesthouses door. Only with an hour walk you can easily reach the tiny village of Pspkszentlszl (5), consisting only of a few whitened houses with porticos. The shingled chapel in the castles arboretum is particularly worth seeing. The castle was built by Lszl Pl Eszterhzy in the 1790s. Today, the Pcs Bishopric has a pilgrims house constructed here. mecsekndasd (6) is a German-speaking village where the Arpadian-age St. Stephen chapel from the 12th century used to stand in the centre of the settlement. According to the legend, St. Margaret of Scotland was born on the outskirts of Ndasd in

The castle is a regular venue for childrens archery classes; those who register in advance receive a map and snack for the hiking trip to the Zeng. The town hosts regular exhibitions and museums by numerous contemporary artists while its swimming hall is a beautiful example of settled contemporary architecture. The neighbouring settlement Zengvrkony (2) is well-known for its museums and folk traditions. Since 2000 the community has been the home to Hungarys first Eggs Museum featuring painted and decorated eggs. The straw treasury is a museum collection. The Zengvrkony local museum is considered one of the most beautiful dwelling houses of Hungarian folk architecture and is operating as a weaving workshop even today. This is where the local speciality, the so-called bodor canvas is made and sold. You do not want to miss the reformed church and the memorial statue of Lajos Flep in its yard. Pusztabnya (3) is a former settlement, today a popular picnic area on East-Mecsek hiking trips. It is one of those settlements of this area where immigrant German craftsmen blew glass in the 18th century. The remained ovens are still being used by contemporary artists on special occasions.

Rka-Castle (Rkavr); the ruins are accessible on a charming forest route. Similarly easy to reach is the castle ruin from the Turkish era on Schlossberg, offering an unrivalled view from its lookout. Plenty of folk and industrial buildings are waiting here for you: mills, a cellar street, local museum. Being a station on the Pcs-Mecsek Wine Road, Mecsekndasd offers excellent wines and national meals in a great number of its wine cellars.

Not being covered by any navigation system, those who succeed in finding this village will be welcome with an organic pig in a poke. Experience and enjoy riding and horseback archery on these elegant, sporty and strong Kisbr horses that are a Hungaricum breed and kept freely in the valley. A nature trail, a soft energy path, marked hiking trails connected to the Kktra (Blue Trail) are leading to the nearby forests while dinner on request, baking in the oven and various organic products call to the table. Join your landlady on her daily orienteering run to the next villages goat cheese farm instead of shopping in the supermarket. Meantime, the less sporty ones might try to pound some soil bricks with their landlord. The guesthouse operates on solar energy; its wooden surfaces are treated with beeswax; its wastewater is cleaned with reed. Respect for nature; living harmoniously with the environment; and preservation of traditions is taught to the younger generations in the qualified nature centre. There is still a lot to learn!

Kn, Gorica and Bkksd are also parts of the Green Valley. The first two villages used to be entirely extinct until they had been re-populated in the past fifteen years as a consequence of outmigration from the cities. In these fairy tale-like villages, most of the tiny white houses are inhabited by guests even in the wintertime, when tile stoves make them feel warm and cosy. In Kn (2), the bakers special bread and pastry are prepared from historic Hungarian recipes; but also the riding school and an interesting conversation while enjoying bread and drippings in Macis summer kitchen are worth a tour here whether on foot, on bike or on horseback. When you are a guest in Gorica (3), you can learn everything about ecological farming in your kitchen garden. There are many certified riding schools in Bkksd (4), venue of the national cross-country riding championship, thus enlarging the club of natural horse keeping. Also the honey is famous here. 10 minutes from Pcs, at the foot of Jakab hill lays cserkt (5). The steep southern slope of the hill consists of characteristic red sandstone that had been formed by wind and water into extraordinary rocks and cliffs: the Babs rocks and the Zsongor stone, both surrounded by many legends. This is where you can find remete-cave, too. The rocky forests feature unique plant symbioses and a diverse animal stock. This region is among the most valuable nature protected areas in the mecsek. You can reach the mountain top on many marked hiking routes from various directions and find ruins of the Hungarian Pauline cloister. The outside and inside fresco remains of the tiny Arpadian-age Cserkt church are invaluable. Furthermore, viewing the Stations of the Cross pictures by the famous contemporary priest and thinker, Pter Prokop, is highly recommendable. The village is also well-known for its excellent hospitality and its delicious folk cuisine.

Where the old Danube turns aside, there lies Mohcs (1). The town has gained worldwide fame as the Bus March was added to the UNESCO list of Cultural World Heritage sites as a living tradition.

26

Even though the Bus march, a farewell to winter, attracts many tens of thousands of visitors every year, it is not a tourist attraction in the first place but a Sokac family tradition being passed on from father to son. The boys grow up to it; learn how to do it; deserve it to be a bus. Each and every bus community has its own customs as to how they prepare themselves for and show themselves in course of the one frenetic week of the Bus March. This is something for real men only! The selfmade masks and sheep furs are then resting for another year in the storage rooms, especially designed for this purpose, in the houses backyards. The battle of Mohcs, as known from history books for sealing the countrys fate, had taken place on the plain south of the town on 29th August 1526. 28 thousand Hungarian soldiers have died here; the Historic memorial Park was being raised to honour them. In between the mass graves, visitors can view carved wooden sculptures of King Louis II, Pl Tomori, Dorottya Kanizsai and Sultan Suleiman. Building style, wines, meals and music of the wine cellars of mohcs-Bly White Wine road vary widely from Sokac to Danube Swabian national traditions. The cellar village is in Bly (2) the most considerable. Villny-sikls Wine route is Hungarys first (1994) wine route and has been most visited ever since. Red wine is being cultivated on the eastern hill slopes of this historic wine area. The most widespread grapes are Blue Portuguese (kkoport), Blue Franc (kkfrankos), Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir and Zweigelt. White wine is being cultivated on vast areas, on the central and western slopes of the wine region. Main wine types are Italian Riesling, Hrslevel, Chardonnay, Traminer, Rhine Riesling and Kirlylenyka. Besides the cellar street in Villny (3) and the traditional cellar villages of Villnykvesd (4) and Palkonya (5), large cellars and extended hotels responding to international architectural and service trends have emerged here in the past few years. Today, Villny features also a four-star wine-wellness hotel.

sikls (6) is one of the southernmost towns in Hungary. The Sikls castle used to belong to the most modern military establishments in its period; at the same time, it was one of the most significant Hungarian Renaissance buildings. Due to reconstruction works the castle will be closed for a few months in 2011. Nevertheless it is worth paying the town a visit: besides its buildings remained from the Turkish era, Sikls has opened its thermal adventure spa in 2010, with a very curious architectural concept. Merely 2 km from here lays Harkny (7), a frequently visited place by tourists from the most distant points of the continent not only because of its uniquely effective healing water; but also because of its favourable climate and the yearly 2,100-2,200 hours of sunshine. The renovated medicinal centre awaits medicinal tourists with the quality and the comfort of two-bedded hotel rooms. Numerous high-standard three- and four-star hotels have opened their doors in the past years in the town, many of whom dispose of their own healing water and medicinal department. In 2010, the exclusive thermal conference centre had been opened here.

Of all the cottages hidden in the Mecsek held by mecsek forestry corp., we shall recommend you the guest houses on the lakeshore in Orf; and the high-standard hunters cottages in the forests of nagymt (5) and mszkemence (6). Besides the castle-style hunters house, there is also a nature education centre and a narrow-gauge railway operating until Almamellk from here, the picturesque sasrt (7). This is the forestry managing Mecsextrm adventure park in Pcs, too. For the most adventurous ones, the nomad camp in Ss-Valley (Ssvlgy) near Hetvehely might be just the perfect choice. Gyulaj forestry and Game management corp. is most proud to present that, according to the recent worldwide rank, 11 out of the worlds first 50 deer trophies are originating from Gyulaj (8). Lengyel-Annafrd is the most popular place to go for nonhunters. Its visitors centre is the starting point for nature paths, a lookout tower, but also a nature education centre, handicrafts workshops, bicycle rental and tour guiding, nomad camping and cottage are waiting for their guests here. The forestrys guest house on the lakeshore had been recently renovated and can be recommended even for those used to the citys comfort very warm-heartedly.
