Funeral of Candy Hanis This is a time to reflect on the broader picture. 1. We are eternal beings.

"Man was also in the beginning with God." (DC 93:29) God is "the Father of spirits" (Heb 12:9) "Now the Lord had shown unto me, Abraham, the intelligences that were organized before the world was; and among all these there were many of the noble and great ones." (Abr 3:22) Our Heavenly Father knew us very well in that pre-mortal realm and specified assignments we would have in this life. "Then the word of the Lord came unto me, saying, Before I formed thee in the belly, I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations." (Jer 1:4-5) Undoubtedly Candy was foreordained to the many callings she had in mortality, the principle ones being wife and mother. 2. Christ was a premortal spirit like we were. Abraham refers to Him & us in this passage about premortal spirits. "And there stood one among them that was like unto God, and he said unto those who were with him: We will go down, for there is space there, and we will take of these materials, and we will make an earth, whereon these may dwell; And we will prove them herewith, to see if they will do all things whatsoever the Lord their God shall command them;" (Abr 3:24-25) A primary feature of life here on earth is testing to see if we will keep commandments and be faithful. The purpose of testing is to expose weakness, if any, so it can be fixed through repentance. 3. Another reason we come to mortality is to gain an education. One of most important things we learn is to distinguish between good and evil. To know the difference is to become "as Gods" (Alma 12:31). After Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit: "And the Lord God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: ..." (Gen 3:22) We do this by experiencing opposites: "... if they never should have bitter they could not know the sweet."

(DC 29:39) By divine design, we all experience opposites and opposition. Much of that is not because we have done something wrong, but rather because we need the education. Without that experience we would never appreciate how wonderful eternal life is. We would be like Adam and Eve if they had remained in the Garden of Eden. This is how Lehi describes what they would have been like: "... they would have remained in a state of innocence, having no joy, for they knew no misery; doing no good, for they knew no sin." (2 Nephi 2:23) Like all of us, Candy encountered her share of opposites, health and sickness, pleasure and pain, good times and hard times, and in the last year, perhaps more than her share of opposition. "For verily I say unto you, blessed is he that keepeth my commandments, whether in life or in death; and he that is faithful in tribulation, reward of the same is greater in the kingdom of heaven." (DC 58:2) Not a bigger mansion, more extensive grounds, fancier pool, but rather a greater appreciation of eternal life because of experiencing a greater contrast. For Candy, eternal life will be very sweet. 4. So here we are in school that provides education for the eternities. It is not the plan for student to be in school forever. They get the education and then graduate. Candy was in the accelerated program, finished all the requirements, and graduated early. Graduation is not an end, but a commencement. What happens after commencement? Where is she now? "Now concerning the state of the soul between death and the resurrection--Behold, it has been made known unto me by an angel, that the spirits of all men, as soon as they are departed from this mortal body, yea, the spirits of all men, whether they be good or evil, are taken home to that God who gave them life. And then shall it come to pass, that the spirits of those who are righteous are received into a state of happiness, which is called paradise, a state of rest, a state of peace, where they shall rest from all their troubles and from all care, and sorrow. ... they remain in this state, ... the righteous in paradise, until

the time of their resurrection." (Alma 40:11-14) This verse has a list of things Candy is now resting from: trouble, care, sorrow. Work is not in the list. Work is an eternal principle. The Church is organized in the spirit world, and her organizational abilities and positive attitude will be put to good use there. She will not be idle, but active and engaged and will have the energy to be. 5. Residence in the spirit world comes to a close at the resurrection. "... the grave must deliver up its captive bodies, and the bodies and the spirits of men will be restored one to the other..." (2 Nephi 9:12) 6. The scriptures indicate that a complete soul is composed not only of a spirit but also a physical body. "And the spirit and the body are the soul of man. And the resurrection from the dead is the redemption of the soul." (DC 88:15-16) The resurrection will be an exciting and glorious time. Scriptures talk about what Candy and the rest of us will be like in the resurrection: "Now, there is a death which is called a temporal death; and the death of Christ shall loose the bands of this temporal death, that all shall be raised from this temporal death. The spirit and the body shall be reunited again in its perfect form; both limb and joint shall be restored to its proper frame, even as we are now at this time ... Now, this restoration shall come to all, both old and young, ... both male and female, both the wicked and the righteous; and even there shall not so much as a hair of their heads be lost; but every thing shall be restored to its perfect frame ... ... this mortal body is raised to an immortal body, that is from death, even from the first death unto life, that they can die no more; their spirits uniting with their bodies, never to be divided; thus the whole becoming spiritual and immortal, that they can no more see corruption." (Alma 11:42-45) 7. Candy was a model for many principles of the gospel. I would like to refer to two from verses the scriptures. "God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good ..." (Acts 10:38)

Candy followed the Savior's example in doing good. Her life was one of willingness to help with any worthwhile project, diligence in every Church calling, regular temple attendance, countless trips giving people in need of transportation a ride, and a long list of other things. If goodness was only measured by the number of cookies, cakes, and meals that blessed the lives of others, Candy went about doing good. To preface the other verse My wife Linda is helping with events later today. A question arose about how to arrange something. Her comment was, "Normally I would ask Candy." In her callings, in her social interactions, and particularly in her home Candy was the embodiment of this verse: "Organize yourselves; prepare every needful thing; and establish a house, even a house of prayer, a house of fasting, a house of faith, a house of learning, a house of glory, a house of order, a house of God;" (DC 88:119) 8. Candy truly loved her family. Although she has gone on to a new adventure, her family relationships here are still intact. There are many levels of salvation. The highest level is referred to as the celestial kingdom and getting there is called exaltation. Each of us is saved individually, but we are exalted as families. In the eternal scheme of things, there is no more important concept than family. The organization in the celestial kingdom will be a family. The Lord covenanted with Abraham that it would be his spiritual posterity that would be the eternal family of the celestial kingdom. That covenant was renewed with Isaac and again with Jacob. Everyone at some point will have an opportunity to become a member of that family. We are not born into that family by our mortal birth, which is a temporal event. Rather, we are sealed into it. Temple ordinances performed by priesthood authority the Lord has restored to the earth in our day makes that possible. Because Candy and Craig are sealed together as husband and wife for eternity, the sealing of their children into the eternal celestial family happened automatically at birth. Candy's children are still her children and her parents are still her parents and will be through eternity. Candy and Craig are still married and at some point will be

together again. They will still be married. The environment will be different, but they will live together and have the same relationship and association they had here. They will still be who they are. "Those from whom we have to part here, we will meet again and see them as they are. We will meet the same identical being that we associated with here in the flesh -- not some other soul, some other being, or the same being in some other form, but the same identity and the same form and likeness, the same person we knew and were associated with in our mortal existence, even to the wounds in the flesh. Not that a person will always be marred by scars, wounds, deformities, defects or infirmities, for these will be removed in their course, in their proper time, according to the merciful providence of God. Deformity will be removed; defects will be eliminated, and men and women shall attain to that perfection of their spirits, to the perfection that God designed in the beginning." - Joseph F. Smith, IE, June 1909 9. Joseph Smith was visited by several angels who were resurrected. He says of one of them: "He had on a loose robe of most exquisite whiteness." (JS-H 1:31) Resurrected beings wear clothing. In the resurrection Candy will be sewing, doing what she loved. I don't know if resurrected beings go fishing. Craig may need to find another hobby, but Candy will be in heaven, and that will be part of why it will be for her. 10. Our Heavenly Father knows what He is doing. Nephi said, "He doeth not anything save it be for the benefit of the world; for he loveth the world" (2 Nephi 26:24). His plan for us is magnificent, and Candy is on track with His plan for her.
