Disaster struck at Joyland Theatrethis past weekend, during the midst o the July 3 centennial celebrations. A large section o the brick frewallon the east side o the building col-lapsed due to high winds. Originally someone said they thought they mighthave seen a twister, said Melissa Crisp-in-Piche, whose parents own the the-atre. She said now people are saying itmight have been a microburst, whichis a localized column o sinking air that produces damaging winds at thesurace, similar to tornadoes, but aredistinguishable rom a tornado.“No one was hurt, which we’regrateul. The movie theatre was ullo people; we had a matinee that day o Cars 2. So we’re just really grateulthat the wind actually took it the other direction instead o into the theatre. Itell on the green space, and everybody is fne,” said Crispin-Piche.“Mom was outside and she was bringing her owers in… and knew the storm was coming, so she thoughtthat she should bring them in. Thenthe next thing you know she heardlike a big bang… she came inside andshe could see daylight in the lobby and couldn’t fgure out why she couldsee light through the ceiling. They  went outside and realized the wall hadallen down because o the wind.”“It was so ast… I had trouble com-prehending what even happened. Itkind o pushed me back in the cub- byhole, and then I came back into thetheatre and I could see daylight. Ittook me orever to fgure out what hadhappened, it was unbelievable. There was no warning - it just came so ast,”said Sheila Crispin, owner o the Joy-land Theatre. The wall that partially collapsed has been in place since 1912, when Strath-more town council insisted on build-ing two frewalls to help protect someo the businesses.
