ost of us are given advice every day,
sometimes without even noticing it.
Whether it be from a partner, friend,
television show or even magazine
feature, advice on how to eat, dress and live can be found
everywhere (whether you like it or not), and for me,
giving advice is part of my job.
Some of my favourite words of wisdom come from
the author Robin Sharma who said: The purpose of
work is to help people. The other rewards are inevitable
by-products of this singular focus. This is a working
piece of advice I keep close that impacts on all areas of
my life. Another pearl of wisdom comes from our
controversial cover star January Jones who lives by the
mantra: You have to have fun and take risks, otherwise
it becomes boring. I approach the way I work similarly.
The jobs I take, the movies I make; I always want to
challenge myself.
This month, we turned the tables and asked women
in the UAE (and with a few celebrities thrown in) what
was the best advice they have ever received (page 51) and
the results are as thoughtful as they are functional.

JUNE 2011 EMIRATES WOMAN 63
heun Sokhon, 29, stares at the ground, surveying
it slowly. In front of her in the dense Cambodian
jungle lies a hidden garden of danger. Her eyes
move from left to right following the head of a
black metal detector over freshly cut brush. She
listens intently loss of focus could cost her life.
The metal detector hums at a low pitch. If it
jumps to a high frequency she must carefully
mark the spot. Red signs with skull and crossbones dot the
landscape, warning: Danger! Mines!
Sokhon is a deminer working for the Mines Advisory Group
(MAG), a British demining charity. She searches for landmines
facing the same threat that shattered her life at the age of 19, when
she stepped on one and it exploded. She is one of the very few
female amputee deminers in the world, and her courage is helping
to rebuild her country. I dont want people to experience what
I have been through, she says.
Born in 1982, Sokhons life started when civil war raged like wildre
across Battambang Province, in western Cambodia. Her village
was trapped between the recently ousted but still genocidal Khmer
Rouge forces, and the armies of the Cambodian and Vietnamese
governments. I remember growing up, that ghting would break out
at any time, she says. She recalls hiding with her mother and siblings
under the family chicken cage. But the chicken pooped on me, she
laughs. Her father ran and hid when Khmer Rouge soldiers entered
their village. If they caught my father and knew he was a teacher, then

As a self-confessed foodie,
Ill admit that when picking
out my yearly getaway
I do tend to steer towards
locations where I know the
food will be delicious
(I have enjoyed pasta in Italy more times than
I care to share). So I was more than a little excited
to come across the Globetrotting Gourmet feature
in your June issue. I found the piece informative
and personal, enough to encourage me to start
saving for a trip to Shanghai so I can chow down
on your recommendations. Thanks EW.

A MINDFUL READ
Although heartbreaking to get through, I felt your Redemption Through Danger
article was really important. The story of Kheun Sokhon was truly inspirational
and definitely a topic to raise awareness about. These women risk their lives on
a daily basis to rid their country of deadly landmines and support their families.
Although I love to read about the latest trends and beauty discoveries, its
imperative to have a balance and acknowledge the difficulties others face outside
of the UAE. Thanks EW, keep it up.

ON THE EDGE
It was great to see rising singing
sensation Florrie on the pages of EW.
I have been following her music for a
few months and thought it would be at
least a year before our region caught
wind of this talent. The Renaissance
Girl fashion shoot was equal
parts edgy and chic and I found it
refreshing to see something a little
alternative in the local fashion scene.

THE LYALL, MELBOURNE

lralnws
Melbourne is the cooler, more cosmopolitan city to Sydneys touristy haven full of boutiques, caf culture and laid-back living. For a hotel that does boutique to perfection, its the impeccably turned out The Lyall in South Yarra. With only 40 suites, the emphasis is very much on a low-key but highly personalised experience one that oozes sophistication. Each suite comes complete with a fully-kitted out kitchen and sitting room, with all the little personal touches that make it feel like home. The spa is quite the lure for locals (which gives you an idea of its reputation), while the Champagne Bar is also a delicious draw. Perched within walking, or short tram, distance to the centre of town, the beach (St.Kilda) and Brunswick (boutique shopping), it is one of Melbournes elite resting places. www.thelyall.com

ome girls have all the luck, as certainly was the case when Anja
Rubik tip-toed along the red carpet at the amFAR charity gala
during the Cannes Film Festival earlier this summer. Sparkling
amidst a sea of designer footwear at arguably the most glamorous
evening of the week-long event the 25-year-old Polish supermodel
was chosen by Giuseppe Zanotti to wear the worlds most precious,
one-of-a-kind stilettos, designed by the Italian shoe genius in
conjunction with the expertise of glittering gem gurus, Chopard.
The concept behind the collaboration came during an earlier
meeting between the designer and the Swiss jewellery labels
co-president, Caroline Gruosi-
Scheufele, a tte--tte that sparked
a plan of action, and an inspiration
to combine our respective crafts... not
to mention a beautiful means for [the
shoes] future owner to support a noble
cause, Caroline explained. The dream
became reality later that evening when
an A-list audience of Kanye West, Jane
Fonda, Janet Jackson and Kirsten Dunst
watched the shoes be auctioned off for
$200,000 by Eva Herzigova to support
amFARs fight against AIDS. Rather
suitably, the lot was won by an
anonymous private bidder a footwear
fairy godmother, if you will. Now thats
the kind of happy ending we like to hear.
The 12.5cm-high pink satin sandals displayed a staggering 600 precious
gems, comprising of 22 carats of diamonds, 199 carats of pink sapphires and
134 carats of rubellites, strung together by rose gold chains at the ankle. The
shoes were set off by Anjas sky-blue ostrich feather cocktail dress by Emilio
Pucci with a matching pair of briolette-cut stone hoop earrings.

JULY 2011 EMIRATES WOMAN 37
here has been a trending look
that has reared its head in recent
weeks, and thanks to a couple of
outings from the itsy bitsy likes
of Cheryl Cole and Sarah Jessica
Parker, its caused quite a debate.
However you choose to take it, the days of a
Dynasty backcombed bouffant are back, and
I, for one, am smiling about it. Big time.
Hair matters; its by far the best image
transformation tactic a woman has in her
arsenal when it comes to getting ready for
a night out. Dress and make-up alterations
obviously make a difference, yes, but couple
either with hair that looks as dull as dishwater
and you may as well have not bothered at all.
It aint called your crowning glory for nothing,
ladies. In fact, one of the few pieces of fashion
and beauty advice I swear by (along with
wearing all black on days when your brain and
wardrobe are united in malfunction) is that so
long as your hair looks great, the rest will fall
into place. And what says ber-feminine glam
more than a big old swish of salon-fresh hair?
Nothing, thats what.
Luckily, we have landed in a location
where blow-dry stylists are masters of their
trade and salon staff rarely stray from the
bigger is better rule. If a new salon is what
you need, try out Ted Morgan, Palm Jumeirah
(04 4308190 / www.tedmorganhair.com) that
offers a Ladies Night Special every Tuesday
with 30-minute appointments starting from
Dhs100; ideal for any sudden office-to-
occasion panics.
Regarding our locks, though regionally
rich in diverse expert help, we lack in a
summer climate that cares. Even with the
best will in the world, a simple trip to the
salon isnt enough to make volumised hair
work you need a full can of LOrals Elnett
spray, everyones favourite golden oldie, to
stand half a chance. More often than not,
the temperature will bring on the frizz and
your attempt will become an epic hair fail.
A good way to create dramatic height in
this instance is to reach for a doughnut
the netted, structured bouffant-bun, up-do
creating variety, available from all good
pharmacies. However, the only way to make

From the days of Brigitte Bardot and
Aretha Im a big woman, I need big hair.
Franklin the foundation of a voluminous
do has meant fabulous glamour. The key
to avoid tacky connotations being, quite
simply, how one combines it with the rest
of the look. As a good friend states, echoing
Arethas wise words, Bigger the hair,
smaller the body. Not exactly a problem
for the diminutive likes of SJP and Cheryl,
nevertheless, in the real world its essentially
physics and to me, thats a no brainer.

Top Dubai-based hairstylist Maria
Dowling explains the secret to
perfecting summers unstyled look.
Wash and go hair is a great look
any time of the year, especially when the
heat and humidity rises and hair is best
left to its own devices. If youre blessed
with naturally wavy hair, you dont need
to do much to achieve the Thakoon
look. Whether your hair has little or
lots of movement, start off with a body
building shampoo to crank up the
volume. Dry upside down using your
hands to rake through the hair. When
dry, blast hair with cool air to set and
finish off with a little styling wax.
Whatever the trend, make
the summer as productfree as
possible; keep hair maintenance
simple. If its curly, dont spend
hours trying to tease it straight
go with the curl. Keep the special
effects for special events and stick to
simple for everyday. Always start with
the very best shampoo you can afford,
and remember that the best shampoos
treat the hair and scalp. To make sure
hair looks its best, have regular trims.

ong and slightly disheveled,
girl-next-door tresses tucked
into a high-collared coat is
the London-cool signature look
perfected by Christopher Bailey
for Burberry.
Its a hairstyle that has filtered
down to the street (or perhaps it
came from the street), with every
fresh-faced urbanite trying to
achieve the undone look that has
been channeled so effortlessly by
French fashionistas for years.
While preppy models with
windswept waves continue to
grace billboard campaigns for all-
American brands such as Ralph Lauren,
GAP and Tommy Hilfiger, its only recently
that the natural look has hit a cooler note
thanks to the likes of Burberry, Peter Som
and Thakoon for S/S11.
Its no coincidence that going au
natural is the trend to replicate this
summer season. So, instead of freshly
spritzed post-surf hair, take the look off
the beach and onto dry land with tamed
tresses, sports-influenced styling and
retro sunglasses.

nless youve been on an extended sabbatical in the Himalayas
for the past few years, you couldnt have failed to notice the
impact of Mad Men, the TV series set in a 1960s advertising
company centred around Don Draper, the agencys dashing
go-to guy.
However, its Dons wife, Betty, who has caught the attention of the
shows female viewers. The job of playing Bettys mysterious, repressed and
rebellious suburban housewife fell to virtual unknown January Jones. The
last four series of the Golden Globe and Emmy award-winning drama have
been the slow undoing of Betty all unravelling breakdowns and break-ups,
beautifully executed by January. But as mysterious and contrary as Betty is,
the equally mysterious, and perhaps equally rebellious, January sees her and
raises her at that game.
Having own low under Hollywoods radar since her acting career began
in 1999, the last four years have afforded 33-year-old January the spotlight
but perhaps not for all the right reasons. For someone whos been in the
game for over a decade, one might assume shed learnt a thing or two about
handling herself out there, but January ever-so demurely marches to her
own tune and says whats on her mind but only when it pleases her, of
course. I come from a family of very outspoken women, who speak their
mind, she says, So I cant imagine living in a time when you couldnt
express what you felt, or having the lack of choices women had back then.

Candid, controversial and something of an enigma,
Mad Mens January Jones is the silver screens bright

THE GIRL

DPWFSTUPSZKBOVBSZKPOFT
46 EMIRATES WOMAN JULY 2011
January, who is due to give birth this autumn and also the star of movie-of-the-moment X-Men:
First Class, is charming, mysterious and outspoken in equal measure and the very fact we know so little
about her makes us want to know her all the more. Subtly sweeping into Hollywood and onto the set of
Mad Men amid a sea of red lips, oral frocks and blonde locks, viewers and critics were left wondering
whos that girl? Google searches throw up little in terms of back story while tabloid gossip focuses very
much on the now, and bar the few interviews shes done with the likes of GQ, Allure and W magazines,
she keeps fairly tight-lipped about her life past and present.
However, the complicated conundrum about January Jones is that when she does nally pipe up, she
likes to irt with controversy. Not quite Megan Fox or Lindsay Lohan proportions, but neither the butter-
wouldnt-melt you might expect; shes clearly no dumb blonde and wont be told what to do. Take her
role in Richard Curtis comedy Love Actually in 2003, for example. Having been cast as a dizzy American,
when it came to her scene she took control of the script and, unimpressed with the material, started
ad-libbing. Considering this was one of her rst big feature lms, it was a bold move. The minute I got
on set, I started improvising, she says coyly, and before long the producer took me to one side, saying
I cant do that to Mr Curtis script! Fortunately for January, her play on boldness didnt backre.
Another, perhaps more scathing, revelation is the tte--tte she had with Zach Galianakis last month
at a party in LA. They hadnt met before and according to Zach, the story goes: She was like, come and
sit down. So, I sit at her table and we talked for 10 minutes. Next thing, she says, I think its time for you
to leave now. I told her that shes an actress in a show and everybodys going to forget about her in a few
years, so she should be nice. I then got up and left. Not the smartest move considering The Hangover star
is the golden boy of the moment.
For every person in the anti-January camp, including critics who sniped hard after her Saturday
Night Live show in 2009, there are plenty in the pro-January camp. Matthew Weiner, the creator of Mad
Men, said: January has an athletic intensity to her acting. She found a way to make Bettys lack of self
awareness so believable. Donatella Versace, who asked January to be the face of Versaces S/S11 campaign,
called her the perfect Versace woman of the 21st century.
So who is this woman who has polarised opinion in such a short space of time? To unravel the mystery
of January Jones, the easiest place to start is with her name it sounds almost too glamorous to be true,
rolls deliciously off the tongue, and oozes Hollywood potential. It comes from a novel my mother once
read called Once Is Not Enough by Jacqueline Susann, she explains. The main character was January
Wayne and my father liked the way her name sounded with Jones.
Her childhood in Sioux Falls, Dakota, was more ordinary than one might expect. Her two younger
sisters kept her in check, while an after-school job at Dairy Queen and a dream of becoming a storm
chaser kept her out of trouble. I didnt really act up until my early teens as I was always babysitting,
so I think I was a pretty sweet kid. But, she laughs, I didnt have parents like Betty!
Her next role aged 18 was as a model most prominently for Abercrombie and Fitch but her
desire to play a clotheshorse was short-lived. An epiphany at 60s icon Jim Morrisons graveside in Paris
provided January with her light bulb moment. I felt miserable, I hated modelling. When I moved back

LA AND TRY ACTING.
WITHOUT ANY TRAINING

to New York I left my agency and decided to go to LA and try acting.
Without any training. This move saw January bounce from casting to
casting, emotions worn on her sleeve and vulnerabilities barely buffered.
Her next smart move was to date teen pin-up Ashton Kutcher.
However, by the end of the relationship he unceremoniously criticised
her acting credentials. He was like, I dont think youre going to be good
at this, she explains. Of course, he only has nice things to say now
but, if anything, I should thank him. Because the minute you tell me
I cant do something, thats when Im most motivated.
It is with this determination and an ability to portray raw emotions
that landed her the role of her lifetime as Betty Draper a true tour de
force. And for anyone who doubts that a pretty face wont necessarily get
you far in Hollywood, just remember Cameron Diaz and Charlize Theron
both ex-models and now award-winning actresses. Cynics be silenced.
After four years playing Betty, January is under no illusion how
easily she can be typecast. The writing gets more interesting and more
bizarre its phenomenal. Im very protective of Betty but Im also aware
that my character can be very ugly and unattractive. That said, when it
came to X-Men, I was also coming off the back of two dramatic movies
(Unknown and The Hungry Rabbit Jumps), and another season of Mad
Men Ive always been very choosy about the roles I take, but I was
ready to do something a bit more fun. However, as fate would have it,
this instalment of X-Men was also set in the 60s. When I heard that,
I was like Oh my goodness, you must be kidding me! She laughs. But
I read the script and familiarised myself with the character [Emma Frost]
and realised shes so, so far from Betty and the movie isnt a period lm.
The only pressure January put on herself for the role in X-Men was
physical. The costumes are insane and its a lot of body conscious
stuff, she laughs. If you look at the comic book, shes barely dressed!
Shes got quite the bod, which is very intimidating. And so to the
gure thats seen January regularly rate in mens magazines Hot
100 lists how does she maintain it? A self-confessed gym-loather,
it takes something more creative to get January to workout. Hula
hooping, yoga, hiking, dancing, tennis anything that doesnt feel
like punishment! As for her diet, well, she does as she pleases. I eat
healthily, especially now, but if I feel like a cheeseburger Ill get one and
not feel guilty. I just dont do anything routinely.
Its clear that Januarys not all about diva-like outbursts its just
another piece to add to the jigsaw. Away from the cameras, talking about
her off-duty look, she says, You know what, I dont get recognised that
often because I wander around in jeans and T-shirts with my hair in a
SUCCESS FOR ME IS TO FEEL
HAPPY 80 PER CENT OF THE
TIME THATS BEEN MY GOAL
IN LIFE. I WANT TO KNOW
HOW TO BE HAPPY
ponytail. That said, when a red-carpet occasion does beckon, she gladly
obliges, telling GQ magazine: The fashion, the dressing up thats the
stuff I really enjoy. However, she sometimes worries how shell continue
to up the ante. I love the whole nding a dress and feeling glamorous,
but the judgement that goes along with what youre going to wear is silly.
You have to have fun and take risks, otherwise it becomes boring. With
a similar outlook to work, she says: I approach the way I work similarly.
The jobs I take, the movies I make; I always want to challenge myself.
Theres no doubting Januarys one tough cookie, but even cookies
crumble. And so to whom does she turn when in need of a sympathetic
shoulder? Family. My parents and my sisters. Every once in a while, if its
something work-related, Ill talk to my co-stars, because sometimes my
family doesnt understand that aspect of my life, she explains.
A typical homebody who likes to sleep, dine out, see friends and
do up her house, January is clearly enjoying her pregnancy. Im just
kind of in that nesting phase preparing my house and stuff. With
no weird cravings to date? No! I wish I could tell you something
interesting, but I cant! And so to baby names. Perhaps September
or after one of the X-Men characters? That would certainly make
headlines, wouldnt it! she laughs.
With babies ticked off, where does she see herself in 10 years? Well,
ideally Ill still be doing this job, challenging myself and taking risks but
just not be doing it quite as much. I want to do more for my personal life
something just for me. I need some sort of creative outlet.
The question all die-hard Betty fans want to know is how Mad
Mens writers will work her bump into the show. I have no idea yet,
she laughs. I guess they might hide it or maybe write it in that my
character has put on a lot of weight!
If its a case of divide (opinion) and conquer (Hollywood), it seems its
the critics who are doing the dividing, while shes doing the conquering.
And love her or hate her, January refuses to let others have the last word.
I dont fear judgement or the critiques. I dont let it affect me. And, with
the level of whirlwind success shes had, why should she?
Success for me is to feel happy 80 per cent of the time thats
been my goal in life. I want to know how to be happy. But then
theres the feeling that Im not always satised. I have that thing in my
stomach where I just need to keep striving for things. In my mind,
I want the fairytale.

THE BEST ADVICE
IVE HAD IS
52 EMIRATES WOMAN JULY 2011
DO WHATEVER MAKES YOU HAPPY
As simple as it sounds, my father always said to me, If you
are happy, you will never go wrong. This was particularly
right when it came to my career. While my cousins and
friends were forced into certain fields, I was given the
freedom to choose my path and was supported all the way.
When I moved to the Middle East almost 10 years ago,
many of my family and friends said it was a bad move, but
I did exactly what made me feel good and it was the best
decision I have ever made.
SOPHIA SERIN, Editor, Emirates Woman
Okay, its a little schmaltzy, but this one
piece of advice has resonated loudest and
longest with me treat others as youd
expect to be treated. Sure, nobodys nice
100 per cent of the time, but theres no
excuse for treating people with disrespect
or discourtesy. In life, you get out what you
put in if youre rude or disrespectful to
others, how can you expect anything else in
return? I know life doesnt always work like
that, but weve all got to start somewhere.

I remember my brother,

we had just launched

When I was young,
I remember my father
being very careful with

me that it doesnt come easy so we all need to
work hard for it. He also said that we should
appreciate and be thankful for every blessing
we receive. Now that I have my own business,
I have learned how the real world works and
I truly understand the weight of his words. He
instilled in me a strong, and tough, work ethic that
means I push myself to succeed even when I face
problems. I learnt a lot from my dad, and I hope
I can share his knowledge with my children.

WHATS THE WORST
THAT COULD HAPPEN?
My mum often uses the old adage, whats
the worst that could happen? and nine
times out of 10, its to persuade me to take
risks and leaps of faith. She said it to me just
a few weeks ago when I was making the
decision whether to change jobs. I love that
she will always be the one convincing me to

basketball coach,
who is still a very
dear friend today.
I was going though a
rough period and felt very low. Things always
seemed black or white and I was yet to learn
that there are grey areas, and that the way one
deals with a difficult situation defines and shapes
your character and the outcome. I had an eye-
opening conversation over the phone with my
coach. He dissected my situation, showing me
how, in the entire helplessness of a situation, I still
had a choice. He taught me that being helpless is
only a state of mind, in most cases at least, and
that although not always ideal, you will always
have a choice.

LOVING WHAT YOU DO IS
THE ONLY WAY TO BECOME
GOOD AT IT...
This advice came to me at a very pivotal
time in my career when I had a choice to
opt for the easy option or take a leap of
faith and start my own business. It came
from an old school friend who told me to
love what you do, as that is the only way
you will become good at it. He had also
just started up his own business, which
is now one of the most reputable graphic
design companies in Australia. I followed
his advice, opened my own business and
found it the most rewarding experience
Ive ever had. As long as Im passionate
about something, I know I can do it.
SACHA PLUMBRIDGE, director,

In my mid 20s I underwent a time of worry,
questioning my career goals and financial
position. I left my job as a lifestyle PR for one
in a corporate environment, thinking this was
the key to moving up. Only after nine months
of misery did I realise I was far better suited
to a fashion and luxury environment. I moved
back to my old position and it truly felt like
coming home.
Modern life offers a myriad of options,
but understanding and accepting who you are
and what makes you tick will stop the endless
mental questions and inner angst and allow
you to get on with
it! In moments of
self-doubt, I hear
my old colleague,
Tam, saying, with
acceptance comes
peace. I laughed
at the time, but
I remember the
moment and I think
she had a point.

I never want

that. You only get one chance to live life

When faced with difficult decisions,
I always bear this in mind. When I
was first offered the chance to move to
Dubai, I faced all the what ifs of moving
abroad, but realised that I could just
as easily stay in England and end up
thinking what if I had moved to Dubai.
So I packed up and went.
Theres always a what if waiting
by the latest trends, colours and collections so
its hard not to buy into every look that graces
the runways. The truth is, not all of these trends
suit my frame and it would be insane to bounce
from one to the other every five minutes.
The trick is to reference these trends while
maintaining your very own look, so you
always represent your personality. I have a
feeling that following this advice is the work
of a lifetime, but Im willing to work on it...

razil might have some of the worlds best beaches,
gorgeous weather and a carnival atmosphere that
resonates around every city, but when it comes to
fashion it is not all gold lam hot pants, exotic beachwear
and those off-duty staple of the shoe world Havaianas

Until youve experienced what this incredible country has to offer,
it is easy to dismiss Brazilian fashion which is worth an incredible
$52 billion a year as anything more than samba and swimwear.
But attending the Minas Trend Preview one of the biggest
fashion events in the country was not only a chance to see the
forthcoming S/S11 collections (summer starts in December), but also
to witness what the Brazilians do best creative catwalks infused with
a happy local spirit and a lot of excellent designs that wouldnt be
out of place in the UAE. In fact, many of the designers brought their
collections to the Emirates for last years Whos Next fashion event and
received a positive reaction from shoppers.
The Minas Trend trade show, held in the industrial city of Belo
Horizonte, is a preview of what to expect at the large runway shows
held at Fashion Rio and So Paulo Fashion Week. Now in its eighth
year, the event hosted 31 brands and 19 catwalk shows and was
curated by well known Brazilian designer Ronaldo Fraga. Under
this editions theme of Oxygen, Fraga chose different looks from the
various collections and built an amazing opening show featuring
vibrant hues, colour blocking and a lot of sheer fabrics.
Highlight collections included Alessa renowned for her modern
prints that would suit both the Copacabana beach set as well as
Dubais high society ladies and Gig by Gina Guerra a relatively
young brand that makes very wearable clothes with a modern and
feminine edge.

Alessa, the label sticks to its South
American roots but adds a touch
of modern day sophistication. The
S/S11 collection has a very
Brazilian touch with fun, flair and
florals ruling the runway. Models
were adorned in shimmering silk
metallic midi dresses (very now),
printed kaftans inspired by the
Amazon and bold floral print maxis
tied at the waist with bright yellow
leather belts. Hair was worn up
and accessorised with elaborate
embellished hair pieces which
cascaded down the models faces.
Bringing together the many
characteristics of the Brazilian
people, Elizabeth Faria, the
designer behind Vivaz, closed
day three with a glitzy show
of glorious eveningwear. Frou
frou frocks, gold and fawn coloured lam
dresses, turquoise one shoulder gowns
and staggeringly high heels were in
abundance. Elizabeth is not ashamed to
exploit what Brazil does best party and
showed the audience that fun doesnt have to
mean fast fashion. The luxury line, which is
exported to the Middle East, did show some
chic casual wear, but its this collection of feminine
frocks that really brought the house down.
Inspired by Brazils Japanese
population, the designers Barbara
Maciel and Louise Cristine mixed
contemporary Japanese design
and traditional crafts from the Far
East, such as origami, to produce
a chic tailored collection for
modern women. Red, pink and
white dominated the collection and
kimono style maxi-dresses, worn with
large belts that looked like exotic
lilies, created a stylish silhouette. But
the biggest runway wow factor was
the fan effect dress worn with high-

blue, teamed with red Mary Janes.

PATRICIA MOTTA
In the glorious outdoor

showcased her S/S11
collection. Walking to the
beat of Blondie, models
were adorned in luxurious
silks, light knitwear and
sheer dresses. Her passion
for colour wasnt as evident
as in previous collections,
with pastels, pinks, nudes and
white dominating the mostly
evening wear-based show. The
entire collection was beautifully
feminine with cute blouses, short
shift dresses, embellished detailing,
waists nipped in with skinny belts
and 50s inspired swimwear
a welcome change to the skimpy
two-pieces that Brazil is so famous
for. Gig is currently available across
the USA and Europe but is yet to
explore the Middle East, which is
a shame as this is a label that could
work very well in this region.
The 70s influence was a huge trend at
the international S/S11 shows and that
was no different in Brazil. Large floppy
hats, tailored flared trousers, high-
wasited shorts and crochet waistcoats
adorned the open air catwalk set within
3,000 acres of Brazils finest parkland.
Snakeskin is also a huge trend for

it into everything from vest tops, to mini

amed for her kooky dress sense, baby-

pop phenomenon that is Katy Perry has
us all hooked on her next creative move.
However, her rocky road to stardom started
with a young Katy singing in a gospel church
choir. After several attempts at making it she
was signed to Capitol Music Group in 2007,
a company which embraced her innovative
vision. Five years later and Katy now reigns
supreme as a bonafide pop princess and the
only artist to have spent an entire year in the
Billboard Hot 100 charts. Whether it was her
out-there lyrics or kitsch stage outfits (best
described as a fruity cocktail of colour) that
put her on the radar of hair conglomerate ghd,
(good hair day) she certainly attracted its
attention, and has since become the new face
of the brand.
Photographed by world-renowned David
LaChapelle for the ghd campaign, Katy
showcases the latest hair trends in a
whirlwind of colour and dream-like sets,
adopting different characters as the shoot
unfurled from bohemian goddess to
glamorous vixen. The ghd shoot was perhaps
a nod to her own electrifying stage personas,
but then there arent many women who can
stand shoulder to shoulder with leggy
Victorias Secret models and proudly hold
their own, as she did whilst performing

CONGRATULATIONS, YOURE THE NEW
FACE OF GHD!
Thank you! I was really excited to work
with ghd because Im always changing my
style and keeping it fresh. When ghd
approached me to be its new face, I looked
at its range of products and saw how
spontaneous they are, from the hot pink
flat iron to its work with David LaChapelle.
Its a very fashion-forward and bold brand,
so I want to be associated with them.
YOU ARE VERY CONFIDENT AND
SUCCESSFUL WHATS YOUR SECRET?
Its really all about developing who you are
inside, first and foremost. I believe in integrity,
respect and independence. I can be a feminine
woman without being a male hater.

Well, my hairdresser was using the hot pink
flat iron, and I had never seen a hot pink
one. I was really amused by the packaging
and learnt that its one of the best styling
tools out there. Flat irons are fantastic
because its an easy way to look like youre
fresh out of a salon.
HOW DO YOU GET SUCH SHINY LOCKS?
My top tip is washing your hair every other
because its something Ive done before,
and its something I know I can do well.
The 1980s look was really hilarious and
fun. It was a very bold move. Im even
using that look in an upcoming music
video, which is going to be exciting.
DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE WAY TO
WEAR YOUR HAIR?
I have two favourite looks a high 1980s
ponytail, a la Madonna, and a really nice
1940s set, a la Veronica Lake.
WHAT ABOUT A FAVOURITE OUTFIT

The tiered cupcake skirt from my

THE GHD SHOOT IS BASED ON BYGONE
DECADES WHICH IS YOUR FAVOURITE?
Ive always really loved the 1940s, from the
pin-up girls to the Stepford Wives. I love the
timelessness and classic feeling of that era.
All the women were well manicured and very
prim and proper. Even though they werent
quite as independent as we are now, the way
that they presented themselves was practically
perfect. I love that about the 1940s.

Theres a big range of women who have
influenced my style, from fictional to real life
characters. Lolita, for instance, because of the
way I imagine her and the way Ive seen her in
both black and white and colour movies. For
cartoon influences, its Judy Jetson, Betty Boop
and Wonder Woman. And, of course, the real
people: Dita Von Teese, Daphne Guinness,
Agyness Deyn, Chle Sevigny. These women
are my style icons.

T
he LOccitane story starts in
1976, when a curious 23-year-
old literature student, Olivier
Baussan, purchased a broken
down steam distiller machine. Once
restored, he raided the countryside for
natural ingredients to make essential oils
to add to his secret formula shampoo.
His fascination with raw materials and
the world of fragrance led Olivier to
create, bottle and sell his home-made
potions at local markets in Provence.
As word spread about his natural flair,
the niche business gathered pace leading
Olivier to open his first shop in 1979.
Fast-forward 30 years and now with
over 1,000 shops, Olivier is considered
a local hero and stands firmly at the
helm of global beauty brand LOccitane
En Provence.
At LOccitane, its beauty philosophy
pays homage to all things organic. Led
by modern day eco warrior Olivier, the
company prides itself on safeguarding
Mediterranean tradition and the
environment. For LOccitane it is nature
that bestows the secret of eternal youth.
Considered as the go-to brand for
natural beauties in the know, LOccitanes
fans get ahead of their contemporaries in
the beauty stakes by arming themselves
with best-selling products like the Almond
Supple Skin Oil, Shea Butter Hand Cream
and Lavender Extra Gentle Soap. The latest
fragrance launch, Pivoine Flora, unveils
a new star ingredient; enter the peony.
A FLORAL
TRIBUTE
Whether you are captured by the bold colour
palette or fresh sweet scent, the peony, with its
plethora of petals, is having its moment in the
spotlight. The peony takes the leading role in the
new LOccitane Eau de parfum, Pivoine Flora.

The peony grows all around the
Mediterranean in France, Greece,
Italy and Spain.
Peonies have long been
heralded as a symbol of femininity
and beauty; the Ancient Greeks
worshipped the flower and
considered it a lucky charm.
There are two types of peony
herbaceous and officinalis.
LOccitane uses the root of the
peony rather than the flower to make
its essential oils.
The peonies in France bloom in
the month of May and there is a
three-week window before they
must be cut.
The fragrance of the peony
is a distinctive rustic scent
reminiscent of freshly cut grass.
The flower was cultivated in
the Middle Ages for its
medicinal qualities.
LOccitaine uses the
peonies grown exclusively
at the Rivire family farm,
where they cultivate 700
varieties.
THE FACTS
INTERVIEW WITH...
FOUNDER OF
LOCCITANE,
OLIVIER BAUSSAN
WHEN DID YOU DISCOVER YOUR LOVE OF PERFUMES?
My first memory was when I was walking to school with my brother.
I was seven years old and loved the smell of the honeysuckle.
WHEN DID YOU REALISE YOU HAD AN APTITUDE TO CREATE
FRAGRANCE?
I bought a very old distiller machine, I repaired it then I made my first
essential oil out of rosemary, which was plentiful where we lived.
HOW DID YOU START THE BRAND LOCCITANE?
One day I was walking by an old run down soap factory, the sign
outside attracted me so I went inside. There I met an elderly
gentleman who owned the factory. We spent an entire day talking and
he gathered that I was very passionate about fragrance. The gentleman
had no children to pass on his legacy to, so he gave me the factory.
That was where everything began.
WHICH MOTTO DO YOU LIVE BY?
It is a quote from William Faulkner: Always dream and shoot higher
than you know you can do. Dont bother just to be better than your
contemporaries or predecessors. Try to be better than yourself.
WHAT INSPIRES YOU TO CREATE?
The raw materials in nature inspire me, but what I really aim to do is
to translate a story through each product there should be a different
story every time.
CAN YOU DESCRIBE THE LOCCITANE WOMAN?
She is sensitive and concerned with tradition.
She is always respectful of culture, astute and
knowledgeable.
WHERE CAN WE FIND YOU WHEN YOU ARE NOT
WORKING?
I love to read, you can see from my library full of books. I also love
to go fishing. I have an old fishing boat in Corsica that is very
special to me, it is where I can go to completely relax.
WHAT IS THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU HAVE BEEN GIVEN
AND FROM WHOM?
It was from a dear friend, a famous photographer called Henri
Cartier-Bresson who lived nearby. He once told me: Each time
you have one franc, invest it in your brand, even when you come
up against adversity. I have always kept his advice in mind.

with smiles and the key to my home for two days.
After a satisfying siesta and freshen up in my

My very first experience of Spanish dining is
at the Hotel Arts (www.hotelartsbarcelona.com)
where my taste buds are tantalised with a tapas
inspired meal at Arola. Recognising that my
group and I were new in town, our waiter
embraced his inner tutor and showed us how to
make a traditional Catalan starter which
included fresh garlic, tomato and olive oil on
crusty bread with no cooking required, this is
my kind of food! On to the main course, where
I devour a succulent piece of beef cooked in the
true European style of lightly searing on each

Arolas signature potatoes.

Not being a girl used to walking (ahem), a bit
of a break was well and truly needed. Having
heard rave reviews from girlfriends about
the quirky W Hotels Bliss spas I decide to
treat my travel weary hands to a manicure.
On arrival I am encouraged to indulge in the
chocolate brownie buffet (had rumours of my
sugar addictions reached Spanish
shores?) followed
by a truly
excellent
manicure. After
working on my
cuticles, my hands
are placed into
plastic bags
containing warm
hand cream and then
inducing gowns, this store really does
encourage princess behaviour.
After a quick change I am ready to do some
more exploring bravely without a guide,
especially as I have never been blessed with
navigational skills. Not veering too far from the
El Born quarter, I stumble across the Picasso
museum on Montcada Street. With a queue
stretching the length of the street (it is best
to get there early) I walk on to discover art
behind every door of this quarter. Then,
with my feet pointing towards a resting
place, I end the afternoon in Plaa de les
Olles one of El Borns most bustling
squares and the perfect place for a spot
of people watching over a delicious gelato.
BARCELONA TO MADRID
Me striking a pose outside
the Westin Palace hotel
Being a history geek, I am desperate to see the
many sights of Barcelona. Wandering around
the Gothic Quarter I am transported back to
another time with ancient cathedrals, old
galleries and boutiques lining every street.
Those in search of shops rife with quirky fashion
and local designers should head for the El Born
district, which is also home to bakeries and
confectionary shops that satisfied my sweet tooth.
As a well-known face in the malls of Dubai,
I confidentently navigated my way to the
famous Passeig de Grcia where Barcelonas
elite shop. A trip to Spain is never complete
without a visit to Loewe to ogle this

leather jackets, while my next stop was a
department store with a difference. Santa

168 years and encourages hours
of the most relaxing retail therapy

vital USP is the in-house tailor

therapist, Laura, is Barcelonas answer to Carrie

tales of life in the UAE versus Spain, Laura gives me an
insiders insight into real Barcelona living. With my
hands transformed and my nails kissed a ruby colour,
I skip out of out of the spa with a whole list of places
to visit on my next trip.
The next stop on the itinerary is Madrid.
A mere three-hour high-speed train ride later
I enter the world of old fashioned glamour at the

Originally one of the citys oldest banks, it
recently reopened its doors with crystal chandeliers

to Toledos early Arabic rule.
We round off our tour with

special experience, with
attention to detail a priority.
The restaurants recipes, which

Once again the heels are kicked off in

of Madrids art district, which boasts three
of the worlds best art museums: the Prado,
the Thyssen-Bornemisza and the Reina

how Madrid blends old buildings with new,
as it was originally a power station before
being converted into a post-modern work
of art. It also boasts a Patrick Blanc

than 15,000 plants food for thought for

The day ends with dinner at the two-
Michelin starred restaurant Ramon Freixa

month waiting list, I have a feeling we are
in for something special. Lavish is the key
word here, and stepping into the intimate

mosaic floors, black goblets and mirrored
ceilings. Our first course is a variety of

by the famous Big Duck burger.
After some cheese and coffee, it is time to

Kuwait welcomed heritage fashion company Missoni for the launch
of their second hotel, with the first located in Edinburgh, Scotland.
The Missoni family were out in full force, mingling with guests and
chatting animatedly about their latest venture.
With the companys founder Rosita Missoni plumping pillows
upon arrival, it was clear the family were not just silent figureheads,
this is a brand with strong morals and memories behind it.
With their famed zig-zag print plastered across everything
from teacups to towels, billowing fringe chandeliers and matte
gold accents, the Missoni Hotel is far from just another plush hotel.
With character oozing from every wall, the family was keen to stick to
the classic Missoni signature style of colour, texture and pattern.
As guests piled into the new hotel, a surprise Missoni treasure hunt
awaited, offering guests a full view of the grounds with little gifts to
pick up along the way, including miniature bottles of olive oil.
Celebrated chef Giorgio Locatelli and his team treated the Kuwaiti
glitterati to a generous spread with the very best of Italian cuisine, including
lobster, risotto and tiramisu.
This memorable soire will not be forgotten; filled with an eclectic
crowd, fabulous food and plenty of laughter, it had all the ingredients
for a perfect event.

JULY 2011 EMIRATES WOMAN 81
LEO (JULY 24 AUG 23)
Youre flailing around like a fish
out of water at the moment. Is
it a loss of focus or a misplaced
raison detre? Embrace the
clich and remember you only
get out of life what you put in.
Use Wednesday 6th as your
new start; write a list of your
goals romantic, professional
and personal and start ticking
them off one by one.
VIRGO (AUG 24 SEPT 23)
No matter how much you
change your hair, clothes or
colour of your nails, its your
outlook that needs a makeover
most. Listen up, a sunny
disposition only goes so far, but
true positivity pays youve just
never persevered long enough
to prove it! Monday 4th is
when youll get to put this into
practice. Are you ready?
LIBRA (SEPT 24 OCT 23 )
Some say talk is cheap, but it will
cost you dearly if words laced
with venom are thrown around
blindly. Say what you mean,
but think before you speak
especially on Monday 31st .With
the sun in the sky, take advantage
of cheap deals and book yourself
a mini-break some time out of
the city will reinvigorate you at
just the right time.
SCORPIO (OCT 24 NOV 22)
Two big decisions loom this
month one financial and one
business. Focusing your energies
on both may feel like your soul
is being sapped, but all will come
good in the end. Knowledge
is power, so put yours to good
use on Monday 18th. Being in
charge will bring out the inner
empowerment youve been
seeking of late.
SAGITTARIUS (NOV 23 DEC 21)
Your domestic set up might
bring about frustrations this
month, but the end results
are all positive. An unusual
opportunity presents itself on
Friday 1st and you wont be
short of interested parties to
help you investigate it
further. Let go of inhibitions
when a need to be footloose
calls.
CAPRICORN (DEC 22 JAN 20)
A life less ordinary may sound
extraordinary, but a lot can
be said for the comfortable
familiarity of routine. However,
if youre after something a
little more ooh la la look to
expanding your horizons one at
a time. A rendezvous on Sunday
24th will deliver just the right
amount of intrigue you need to
get started.

AQUARIUS (JAN 21 FEB 19)
A major dose of fun is on the cards,
but the question is are you in the
right frame of mind to handle it?
Bowing out gracefully is perfectly
acceptable, but look at this as a time
to truly let your hair down. When
good news arrives on Sunday 24th,
make sure you know the difference
between bragging and modesty.
PISCES (FEB 20 MAR 20)
No good deed goes unrewarded and
its high time you got to collect your
prize. Youll be pleased to know
youll be paid back in dividends
by Tuesday 19th. Taking into
consideration that friends come
and go, youd be wise to invest more
time in the ones you want to keep
hold of this month.
ARIES (MAR 21 APR 20)
Batten down the hatches
summers officially here. Its never
pleasant being stuck indoors 24/7,
but use this time to get one over
on your ever-increasing life admin
come Tuesday 5th. But fear not, its
about more than just tedious tasks,
because this is also an opportunity
to develop, or discover, extra-
curricular pursuits. Away you go
TAURUS (APR 21 MAY 21)
Its a given that the fairer sex are
complicated creatures. So, your
other half cant blame you when
no really means yes and maybe
usually means no. However, clear
instructions are needed by Saturday
9th if youre going to make any
headway in a relationship. Its time
to go back to the basics.
GEMINI (MAY 22 JUN 21)
Starting off on the wrong foot
has potential to rock the boat
on Sunday 3rd, but not all first
impressions count. Here, its a
more a case of second time lucky.
With plans afoot for celebrations
towards the middle of the month,
youll need to dip into your energy
reserves to last the distance but
it will be worth it.
A long overdue discussion will come to the fore by Wednesday 20th, but its up to you
how you handle the situation. Play chicken and bury your head once more, or battle it
out bravely? Either way, lessons can be learnt here. Now, on to brighter things look
to the middle of the month for hidden messages that are all about pleasure.
