THE PATHFINDER

Little Valley United Methodist Church 109 Court Street, PO Box 221 Little Valley, NY 14755 (716) 938-6150 Joseph Pascoe, Pastor Office Hours: Monday Friday 9:00-12:00 Monthly Newsletter July 2011
Greetings in the name of our savior Jesus the Christ: I hope this letter finds you all well. Summer is officially here and the busyness of that beautiful time of year has settled in. Summer camps are up and running, VBS is scheduled, painting projects are under way, and the children just had 4th grade graduation. Many of you have met my family and know them fairly well. Ashley our fourth grader was the one graduating. The commencement ceremony, if you can call it that, was really nicely done. A young man by the name of Thomas Patterson gave a brief lesson to the young graduates. The topic was to follow the golden rule. He titled his lesson, Dont pick your friends nose. Now that I have your attention, like he gathered theirs, this slightly disgusting but humorous none the less title captured his young audience. As he walked with them through this process he shared that this really is about the golden rule. Another fairly young man by the name of Jesus said something very similar didnt he? In Matthew 7:12 He tells us, so in everything, do to others as you would have them do to you. He says it in a positive context also, rather than dont do, Jesus says to do unto others. This practice sounds so simple yet it can really challenge us. Our schools are trying to instill such simple rules into our young people, maybe we should learn from them. This summer, as you are enjoying the warm weather, spending time with your families and friends, try to be creative in how you can institute the golden rule. One way might be to utilize your churches community garden, located next to the trinity house garage, maybe its sharing some of that fruit with your neighbors. Maybe its taking the time to stop and visit some friends you havent seen in a while. Whatever it is this summer as you are enjoying Gods beauty all around us, start doing unto others like you want them to do to you. One more thought, stay away from peoples nostrils unless you want them in yours!! Lighten up and live this summer for Jesus Christ. Selah, Pastor Joe

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION Building a Heart of Faith

A huge thank you to all of those in our Sunday School program. We appreciate your dedication and the excellence you put forth each week in your classes. Enjoy your rest this month and next and be ready again for classes September 18th. We are continuing to prepare for VBS and if you haven't found a place to help yet, please see me and I'll find a niche for you. Early registration forms will find their way to your mailboxes soon so please fill them out and return them to Bobbie Jo. As part of being a Safe Sanctuary church, I will need volunteer forms completed by those who will be helping with VBS. You will find those forms in your mailboxes as well. The DC young adult small group members have been meeting sporadically to hang out and have been enjoying the summer break so far. We plan to officially start back up in the fall with the other small groups. If you are interested in joining or may know someone who is interested, or you are looking for information on the DC small group, please contact Sean Andrew. The Eagle's small group will not be meeting formally during the summer. We will be having a dessert fellowship later in the summer to discuss ideas for our fall time together. We have appreciated all of their participation and willingness to learn with us about the end times. We hope all have a great summer! Navigator's 2:7 Discipleship Class meets every Thursday in the Adult S.S. room. The class consists of 6 people who have committed the next 8 months of training in particular spiritual disciplines which will allow them to "know Christ and make Christ known". The class is led by Jon Cable. While we can't take new-comers to the class at this time, we ask for your prayers as these students learn, grow, and become trained in Bible memorization, Bible study, preparing personal testimonies, learning to share the gospel in a clear, and understandable way, becoming regular in Bible reading, and other spiritual practices which will lead towards spiritual transformation. Unfortunately, this class is closed, but once we are done next February, I will begin planning for the next class which will begin fall of 2012. Maybe you will want to be in that class when it happens. Pray about it and talk with Jon if you have any questions about what we are doing or about information regarding being in the next class.

You must be in 2nd through 5th grade or older. We would like to request all current acolytes meet with us to review what you should be doing. Parents please contact Bobbie Jo if your children are interested in remaining on the list to make arrangements. MENS BREAKFAST
The men of LVUMC and other area churches meet for breakfast and study the fourth Saturday of each month at 8:00 AM in the fellowship hall. Join us for Man Food and uncommon discussion. The next dates are July 23 and August 27.

TRUSTEES
At the last Trustee meeting it was decided that Trinity House will be painted this summer. Pastor Joe is heading up a team to power wash & scrape the paint chips off and then the house will be painted. We need 4 5 more teams to help scrape & paint, all you need is a team leader with 5 more people per team. Each team can pick or be assigned a work night, they will join a team from the Believers Fellowship. If all goes smoothly each team will only work 1-2 times. Pastor Joe has already posted the work nights, so get a team together or just show up on a work night & lets get Trinity House painted. Thanks & Praise to our God. Just a reminder, our capital fund raising project for the steel roof over the Sunday school rooms will continue until the end of July. We ask that you pray about this and see what the Lord lays on your heart. If you could afford to help financially with this project it would be much appreciated. Sam will oversee this project, he & a crew will tear off the old roof & a contractor will put the new roof on.

CLOTHES CLOSET
When was the last time you took a peek into the clothes closet? Depending on the day you look it may be bulging at the seams or if you look 2 days later there could be empty hangers on every shelf, every hook & even on the floor. The need continues to be great, look in after the 1st Tuesday of the month, thats the day we host WIC here and the need seems to be even greater in our young families. Its a great feeling to see the gratitude in the faces of the people we serve. They cant believe that someone would love them enough to just give the clothes to them. God loves them that much!!! We can always use baby clothes right up through teen sizes, especially boy teen clothes, jeans & pants for kids & mens jeans sizes 36 and up we are asked for all the time. Mens shirts have a large demand for 2x & 3x & kids pajamas. Thank you, please when you bring your clothes in have them clean with no rips or holes. Starting in June we will be accepting clothes Mon-Fri 9am-12pm when staff are in the office. They can direct you where clothes donations can be put. If you have toys, furniture, or any other non clothes items please contact Bill Perkins @ 716-560-5973 for a drop off time & place. DO NOT leave anything that is broken, has parts missing or without consent. Please do not drop off any junk; we have to pay to have it disposed of!!!!!

That also means that the 9th annual (HUGE) Missions yard sale is coming up fast, all money taken in from the sale goes to our missions fund. We will start taking donations for the sale starting July 18th. Please make sure your donations are clean, not broken & all parts are there call Bill for drop off place & time. Also during the week of the sale we need people to continue to set out things & general help, the sale will run August 1st August 6th & will be open 9am 5pm Monday through Friday and until 1:00 on Saturday. On Saturday August 6th we will tear it all down starting at 1pm, please, please come & give us a helping hand. The last point of discussion is this will be the 9th and my last fair yard sale. The Mission team will be looking for a new lead person to take on that responsibility. God Bless Bill

PRAISES AND THANKS

There were approximately 12 of us that attended Pastor Steves Ordination party at Wilmas last month. What a great honor to celebrate with him and the family Seems like this past month has been an especially busy month with a lot of needed extra prayers. We thank all those that are on the prayer teams and are willing to take a few minutes or longer each time the need arises as well as all the other times we know you are bowing your head or dropping to your knees just to offer up a prayer or give thanks for any of our blessings. May God bless each and every one of you as well.

From The Internet Breakfast at McDonald's This is a good story and is true, please read it all the way through until the end! (After the story, there are some very interesting facts!): I am a mother of three (ages 14, 12, and 3) and have recently completed my college degree. The last class I had to take was Sociology. The teacher was absolutely inspiring with the qualities that I wish every human being had been graced with. Her last project of the term was called, 'Smile.' The class was asked to go out and smile at three people and document their reactions. I am a very friendly person and always smile at everyone and say hello anyway. So, I thought this would be a piece of cake, literally. Soon after we were assigned the project, my husband, youngest son, and I went out to McDonald's one crisp March morning. It was just our way of sharing special playtime with our son. We were standing in line, waiting to be served, when all of a sudden everyone around us began to back away, and then even my husband did. I did not move an inch... an overwhelming feeling of panic welled up inside of me as I turned to see why they had moved. As I turned around I smelled a horrible 'dirty body' smell, and there standing behind me were two poor homeless men. As I looked down at the short gentleman, close to me, he was 'smiling'. His beautiful sky blue eyes were full of God's Light as he searched for acceptance. He said, 'Good day' as he counted the few coins he had been clutching. The second man fumbled with his hands as he stood behind his friend. I realized the second man was mentally challenged and the blue-eyed gentleman was his salvation. I held my tears as I stood there with them. The young lady at the counter asked him what they wanted. He said, 'Coffee is all Miss' because that was all they could afford. (If they wanted to sit in the restaurant and warm up, they had to buy something. He just wanted to be warm). Then I really felt it the compulsion was so great I almost reached out and embraced the little man with the blue eyes. That is when I noticed all eyes in the restaurant were set on me, judging my every action. I smiled and asked the young lady behind the counter to give me two more breakfast meals on a separate tray. I then walked around the corner to the table that the men had chosen as a resting spot. I put the tray on the table and laid my hand on the blue-eyed gentleman's cold hand. He looked up at me, with tears in his eyes, and said, 'Thank you.' I leaned over, began to pat his hand and said, 'I did not do this for you. God is here working through me to give you hope.' I started to cry as I walked away to join my husband and son. When I sat down my husband smiled at me and said, 'That is why God gave you to me, Honey, to give me hope.' We held hands for a moment and at that time, we knew that only because of the Grace that we had been given were we able to give. We are not church goers, but we are believers. That day showed me the pure Light of God's sweet love. I returned to college, on the last evening of class, with this story in hand. I turned in 'my project' and the instructor read it. Then she looked up at me and said, 'Can I share this?' I slowly nodded as she got the attention of the class. She began to read and that is when I knew that we as human beings and being part of God share this need to heal people and to be healed. In my own way I had touched the people at McDonald's, my son, instructor, and every soul that shared the classroom on the last night I spent as a college student. I graduated with one of the biggest lessons I would ever learn: UNCONDITIONAL ACCEPTANCE. Much love and compassion is sent to each and every person who may read this and learn how to LOVE PEOPLE AND USE THINGS - NOT LOVE THINGS AND USE PEOPLE. There is an Angel sent to watch over you. In order for her to work, you must pass this on to the people you want watched over. An Angel wrote: Many people will walk in and out of your life, but only true friends will leave footprints in your heart. To handle yourself, use your head. To handle others, use your heart. God Gives every bird it's food, but He does not throw it into its nest.
