Cynthia DorfmanDirector of Regional Communications and OutreachUS Department of Education400 Maryland Ave, SWWashington, DC 20202Dear Ms. Dorfman,For my blog I'm reporting about your August 12 e-mail to me on behalf of Secretary of Education Arne Duncan.

1) Your e-mail ignored the two questions that I submitted to Mr. Duncan on June 1 and July 7, therefore myunderstanding is that he has chosen not to respond to my questions. If my understanding is incorrect, pleaseadvise.2) I'm trying to determine if Mr. Duncan had a financial relationship with the Save-A-Life Foundation. Would youplease ask him about that and provide me with his answer?Thank you for your continued attention and I look forward to your response by August 24. If you require moretime, please let me know and I'll do my best to accommodate your schedule.Sincerely,Michael Paul Goldenberg6655 Jackson Rd Lot #136Ann Arbor, MI 48103734 644-0975 (c)734 786-8425 (h)mikegold@umich.edurationalmathed.blogspot.com"A public education system is based on the principle that you care whether the kid down the street gets aneducation." Since theSecretary is no longer affiliated with the school system in Chicago, your best source of information is the schoolsystem itself. They would have all the records and data.Sincerely,Cynthia DorfmanDirector of Regional Communications and Outreach

Edgar W. MayesDirector of Correspondence andCommunications Control UnitOffice of the SecretaryU.S. Department of EducationWashington, DC 20202Dear Mr. Mayes,This is a second follow-up to my June 1, 2011 inquiry to Secretary Arne Duncan regarding the Save-A-Life Foundation (SALF), a nonprofit nowunder investigation by the Illinois Attorney General and apparently by at least one federal agency:http://bit.ly/jSxQID You'll recall that my inquiry concerns approximately $62,000 awarded by the Chicago Public Schools (CPS) to SALF. Mr. Duncan signed off on$49,000 of that amount as part of a contract he arranged with SALF's founder/president Carol J. Spizzirri to provide first aid training classes to18,000 CPS students during school years 2004/05 and 2005/06. Ronald McDonald House Charities Inc. contributed an additional $125,000,making a total of $174,000 paid to SALF for the two-year program. However, in response to a federal court subpoena and FOIA requests, CPSapparently has no records that SALF conducted training classes for those years (or apparently any other years).Earlier this year a request was submitted to Chicago Public Schools Inspector General James M. Sullivan to review if the money CPS awardedto SALF was properly administered:http://bit.ly/haoENP For a report on my blog, I'm trying to determine:1) Since Mr. Duncan arranged the lion's share of the funding, does he think that Chicago Public Schools Inspector General James M. Sullivanshould proceed with an investigation to determine if the money CPS awarded to SALF was properly administered?2) Would Mr. Duncan co-operate with such an investigation?Further, since our previous correspondence, these and other related media reports have appeared:6/22/11:
by Chris Wetterich, Springfield (IL) State Journal-Register6/22/11:
 by Dave McKinney, Chicago Sun-Times:6/22/11:
by Monique Garcia and Ray Long, Chicago Tribune6/23/11:
by Will Guzzardi,Huffington PostThe first story describes the substance of the articles:
Two of Gov. Pat Quinn?s appointees were held up in a Senate committee Wednesday, including his nomination of Gery Chico tchair the State Board of Education...Sen. Tim Bivins, R-Dixon, said he asked that Chico?s appointment be held so that he could be asked whether he participated as a board member in the now-defunct Save A Life Foundation, a charitable organization that has faced media scrutiny over whether it trained as many children in first-aid as it said it did.
I appreciated your June 1 and June 14 follow-ups assuring me that the Department?s Office of Communications and Outreach will respond toinquiry ASAP, however, I haven't received any further correspondence. Per the recent stories, the SALF story appears to be gaining momentum,so I'm hoping to go to print next week with Mr. Duncan's response to my inquiry. Therefore would you please direct me to the individual to whomyou assigned my inquiry? Thanks for your continued attention and I look forward to your reply so I may know how to proceed.Sincerely,Michael Paul Goldenbergcc:The Hon.
