Goal-directed Instructional Design Plan - 7th Grade Math: Data and Probability
Author - Melissa Thompson
!" A problem or a need - Students need to be able to appropriately graph data in a box and whisker plot and recognize the median, quartiles, and inter-quartile range of the box and whisker plot that they graph. #" A real-world performance - Students will go around and ask classmates the number of cell phones that are in their household. After students go around and collect the data they will have to create a box and whisker plot graph that represents the data given. Students will also have to show their understanding of the median, quartiles and inter-quartile range of the data that they graphed by answering questions for each of those concepts. $" An instructional objective - the objectives are based on the final outcome, activity or test. These objectives will each be different for the four types of knowledge; performing skills, recalling facts, identifying examples of concepts, and applying principles.
%" Students will be able to identify a box and whisker plot and recognize the median, quartiles and inter-quartile range. &" Students will be able to create a box and whisker plot from data given to them. '" Students will be able to answer questions on the computer relating to box and whisker plots. (" Students will be able to graph and design a box and whisker plot from data they collect on their computer in open office. )" A set of essential content - D.RE.07.01/D.AN.07.04 -Students will represent and interpret data using box and whisker plots and they will interpret the median, quartiles and inter-quartile range of a given set of data. *" An evaluation consisting of a test or observation - Students will create a box and whisker plot on their computer in open office from the information gathered in class by their classmates. Students will need to also show on their presentation the median, quartiles and inter-quartile range below the graph that they designed. Students will print out their final product for evaluation. 1. I will first introduce the topic of box and whisker plots to students on the Smartboard also using a document camera. I will give them an example of what a box and whisker graph looks like and what the data is used for. 2. Next, I will instruct the appropriate way to graph data collected or given by creating a box and whisker plot. During the instruction I will explain the purpose of box and whisker plots, the median, quartiles and inter-quartile range. 3. I will demonstrate how I gather data needed for a box and whisker plot, after I gather the data I will show how to find the median, quartiles and inter-quartile range to appropriately graph the data then demonstrate to students how to represent the data in a box and whisker plot. 4. Next students will practice what they learned and understand by creating their own box and whisker plot by data I provide for them. With the data I provide for them they will have to find the median, quartiles, and inter-quartile range. After they have found this information then they can create the box and whisker plot. 5. Students will then go to the following site http://www.ixl.com/math/grade-7/interpret- box-and-whisker-plots and answer the following questions and show their understanding of what they learned in class relating to box and whisker plots. 6. After students do the following they will have to go around and ask every classmate how many cell phones are in their household. After students have collected their data they will need to find the median, quartiles and inter-quartile range. They will then need to create a box and whisker plot on their computer under open office and show the median, quartiles and inter-quartile range under the graph they created in open office. 7. Students will be graded on their understanding of the box and whisker plot in open office on their computer and representation of appropriate data for box and whisker plots such as the median, quartiles and inter-quartile range. They will print out their final presentation and will also be graded.
Michigan State University, Educational Technology Programs http://edutech.msu.edu Motivation: ! Meaningfullness - Since most students have or are wanting their own personal cell phone and cell phones are one of the main ways students communicate with peers collecting this data will show useful real life application of math concepts.
! Pleasant consequences - Students will be communicating with peers, gathering data and show understanding of data concepts.
! Novelty - I will show students my cell phone and ask them Who has a cell phone?
Socialization - Students will be socializing with each other by going around and gathering data from their classmates to create a box and whisker plot about how many cell phones each household owns. Audience - For what audience are you designing this lesson? Consider the following: ! 12-13 year olds
! Skill Level - 12-13 year old 7th graders who are very familiar with technology, and have their own personal computers that have been distributed by the school district to each individual student.
! Students will need to have an understanding of basic graphs, and data. For this assignment they will need to have an understanding of using open office and knowing some of the graphing tools in open office. Technology Needs - Students will need their own individual laptop, the computers, software, program they will need is Open Office, Internet access to complete the online interactive with box and whisker plots and they will also need a printer to print their final product.
