FIRST STAGE (S-1) Engines T h e S - 1 s t a g e p o w e r p l a n t c o n s i s t s of e i g h t e n g i n e s . F o u r , i n b o a r d engines, a r e mounted in a closed s q u a r e pattern. The o t h e r f o u r , outboard e n g i n e s , a r e m o u n t e d o n t h e points of a l a r g e r s q u a r e r o t a t e d 4 5 d e g r e e s f r o m t h e i n n e r p a t t e r n . T h e c o n t r o l s y s t e m utilizes attitude i n f o r m a t i o n f r o m the i n e r t i a l p l a t f o r m , attitude r a t e derived f r o m r a t e gyros o r differentiated attitude s i g n a l s , and l a t e r a l control derived f r o m control a c c e l e r o m e t e r s o r "Q-Ball" t r a n s d u c e r . T h e s e s i g n a l s a r e s u m m e d and a m p l i f i e d in a n a n a l o g c o n t r o l c o n i p u t e r f o r t r a n s m i t t a l of d - c s i g n a l s t o the a c t u a t o r s of t h e a c t i v e s t a g e . T h e e x c i t a t i o n voltage f o r the engine position p o t e n t i o m e t e r , both f o r c o n t r o l a n d m e a s u r i n g i n s t r u m e n t a t i o n , s h a l l be s u p p l i e d f r o m t h e i n s t x u m e n t unit. V e h i c l e c o n t r o l d u r i n g S - I s t a g e o p e r a t i o n is m a i n t a i n e d b y g i m b a l i n g t h e f o u r o u t b o a r d e n g i n e s t o p r o v i d e p i t c h , yaw, a n d r o l l c o n t r o l f o r c e s . T h e hydraulic a c t u a t o r s that provide the n e c e s s a r y engine gimbaling f o r c e s a r e c a p a b l e of d e f l e c t i n g t h e engine p l u s o r m i n u s 8 d e g r e e s . The c o n t r o l c o m p u t e r d i s t r i b u t e s c o r r e c t i o n s i g n a l s t o t h e s e r v o - v a l v e s on t h e o u t b o a r d engine a c t u a t o r s . S - I V s t a g e i n - f l i g h t c o n t r o l i s a c c o m p l i s h e d by g i m b a l i n g t h e s i x engines. The hydraulic actuators that provide the n e c e s s a r y engine gimbaling f o r c e s a r e c a p a b l e of d e f l e c t i n g the e n g i n e *4 d e g r e e s . T h e a m o u n t of d e f l e c t i o n i s p r o p o r t i o n a l t o the c o m m a n d s i g n a l s f u r n i s h e d by t h e c o n t r o l c o m p u t e r i n t h e i n s t r u m e n t unit. The i n s t r u m e n t unit will provide vehicle s t r u c t u r e f o r s t a b i l i z e d p l a t f o r m s , guidance and instrumentation equipment. The design dictates t h a t s k i n c u t o u t s be m a d e only w h e r e m a n d a t o r y ; t h e r e f o r e , a l l a n t e n n a s o r o t h e r e x t e r i o r equipment s h a l l be s u r f a c e mounted.
