To the Members ot the Nominations Committee.

Welcome to National Convention 2011 in beautitul Colorado $prings. This week is sure to be tilled with sisterhood.
business. education. and tun. I am excited to present to vou mv ideas tor the ottice ot National Vice President ot
Communication and Recognition.

Our sororitv has helped me grow tremendouslv since mv initiation and I am excited about the prospect ot using what I have
learned to give back to the sororitv. As National Vice President tor Communication and Recognition. it will be mv mission
to empower mv sisters to grow and to turther enable them to serve their bands.

Previous councils worked hard to bring our sororitv into todav's standard tor social media and digital interaction. trom
Twitter and Facebook accounts to monthlv chats and the &RXQFLO&RQQHFWLRQ. the National Council has never been closer to
our tingertips. However. with each new added laver comes an added responsibilitv. to use them ettectivelv as aides in
leadership development and empowerment in the bands and lite. This implies that the next VPCR needs to come into the
ottice armed with ideas on how to exploit these resources to their maximum potential.

In mv active membership. I served mv chapter as Recording $ecretarv and increased the standards ot oualitv and
protessionalism tor our meeting minutes. During mv term as NCD VP$P. I reimplemented the NCD publication .DGHQ]D
into an online blogtvpe tormat. Through this digitization process. I gained a deep understanding ot digital mass
communication including how to prevent pittalls that mav arise during the process.

Now that convention is underwav. teel tree to contact me using these methods.

Throughout convention I will be maintaining a blog on mv website (kearnest.weeblv.com) which will address the most
signiticant ouestions that I receive throughout the dav. I invite vou to explore that site as vou can tind a lot ot intormation
about me and mv candidacv. I am eager to talk with vou about mv experiences and ideas tor the ottice.

Respecttullv $ubmitted.

To whom it may concern,

write in support of and on behalf of Mr. Kevin Earnest in regard to his candidacy for Tau Beta
Sigma National Vice President of Communication and Recognition

Kevin was principal tubist in the ONU Wind Orchestra, our top band, which direct, for my first
two years at ONU. He has deep dedication to the group, both musically and socially. With a
handful of other students he formed what any director would recognize as the backbone of the
group, an indefatigable and unflappable positive force in support of the band itself and its
director. My transition into the musical life of ONU was both smooth and enjoyable. credit no
one person more than Kevin Earnest for that; he has been thoroughly helpful and supportive.

Though he was not a music major at ONU, Kevin was always an enthusiastic member of the
different bands. Not only did he make the top band each year, but was also in the ONU
Marching Band for his entire tenure at ONU. Kevin always brought the strengths of dedication
and humor to his leadership roles within the bands, and within TBS. Clearly he was the GHIDFWR
leader of the sorority here. Though he was not always in an official leadership capacity, it
always appeared to me that no important decision is ever made without consulting him.

On a couple of occasions took Kevin aside and challenged him to step up with regard to his
preparation of difficult pieces. He has always accepted my challenge graciously and boldly, and
at concert time has performed some very difficult and exposed passages with a good deal of
security (our performance of John Corigliano's Gazebo Dances comes to mind).

Kevin was always a friend to all, and especially to the freshmen; he had a special way of
including the underclassmen in his social life that most upperclassmen do not possess. He did
so genuinely, like a good-natured big brother.

recommend Kevin Earnest most highly, with no reservations, for any regional or national
leadership roles in Tau Beta Sigma. As a person and as a player he is a gem. predict he will
find some way to be a joyous bandsman throughout his life.

Sincerely

Dr. Thomas A. Hunt

TO: Whom it may concern

Re: Recommendation for Kevin Earnest

Ladies and Gentlemen:

am very pleased to write this open letter of recommendation for Kevin Earnest.
am currently the Head of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at South
Dakota State University (SDSU). have known Kevin for approximately the past five
years both as the department head at SDSU and in my former position as a
professor in the Civil Engineering department at Ohio Northern University (ONU).
would like to speak to several endeavors that Kevin has been involved in for both
institutions.

While was at ONU, taught the environmental engineering courses in the Civil
Engineering program. had Kevin as a student in my introduction to environmental
engineering and science. He was definitely in the top 5% of the students in the
course, and normally expected him to be in the top one or two students in
performance. also specifically remember Kevin's participation in instrumental
music during the academic year and committed participation in the marching band
activities.

Kevin maintained contact with me after left ONU to be the department head at
SDSU. Upon graduation from ONU he applied for a National Science Foundation
grant sponsored summer research experience for undergraduates at SDSU. During
the summer of 2010, Kevin participated in field research that was developing with
Oglala Lakota College on the Pine Ridge ndian Reservation (PRR). Kevin worked
independently to develop a watershed sampling plan for a watershed on the PRR.
Also, he developed GS based mapping for the sampling plan, and conducted
laboratory analyses for digestion of samples for future heavy metals analysis.
Additionally, he worked with SDSU grad students to prepare stream samples for
analysis of human pharmaceutical compounds as part of another research project.
especially appreciated Kevin's flexibility in working with me on the PRR in very
remote and variable field conditions. Kevin also, developed a poster presentation for
the watershed heavy metals analysis project for a future conference presentation
that we anticipate using upon completion of the sample analysis. n fall of 2010

Kevin initiated a Masters Degree program of study in Environmental Engineering at
Purdue University.

Hopefully, have been able to convey through these brief examples that Kevin has
several characteristics that will lead him to be successful in graduate school and in
his chosen professional communities. found him to be a continuously self
motivated individual with strong capacity to learn new technique with little guidance
from others. He quickly developed a plan for success and maintained sustained
involvement in all of the projects that worked with him on this past year. He is a
strong leader and a collaborative team worker. He has successfully researched and
implemented working solutions to environmental problems in a less than desirable
environment. find the quality and continuity of his work to be above what typically
see from master's degree level students. am confident that he will be a major
contributor to the success of whatever organizations he chooses to support in the
future.

Sincerely,
