Myth acts in the world. It effects the way we see the world and act in the world. Film is one of the great myth makers in our society. It mediates the way people understand the world around them. This elective will draw on film to explore both myths in society and and the way myth influence our individual relationships to the landscape. Here the real and imagined imagined intertwine. The intention is to become more conscious of the world behind the world or the stories that construct the way we live. Also we will consider new myths that may be required to meet the challenges of our time. The elective will focus on film as a way of exploring landscape and our relationship to it. Each week the course will be structured around watching a selection of Australian films, readings and discussions. The assessment will be composed of an iterative process of making and remaking short films and reflective conversations. To gain most benefit from this elective your will need to bring your whole self to class.

Use a digital SLR to generate images and ideas.

Students will learn how to use a digital SLR camera and its various functions to control the results of their photographs. Hands-on classes will explore the photography basics (aperture, shutter speed, ISO) and how a combination of these factors can be used to control depth of field, motion blur and image quality. The second phase of the elective focuses on spatial intervention and perception. Shooting exercises will explore the photographic possibilities of creating/changing public spaces, by combining camera techniques with objects, light and movement. It will explore how static elements, as well as the movements and interactions of people within a space, can define a site. Students will also learn how to use Photoshop to import and manipulate images, and to resize and output them for print and online use. Photography will be used in several ways in the elective: to document and represent, and in processes and presentation. Classes will be a combination of practice and theory. Students will engage in regular feedback sessions, as well as the critical examination of work by photographers and artists. Ideas and images will be developed throughout the course, contributing towards the creation of a site-based photography project for final assessment.
