LEARNING OUTCOMES

After completing the topic, student should be able to:

Explain the basic communication systems State the element communication systems State the function of transmission media and product Defined information. Defined signal Defined channel Defined noise Explain Modulation List types of modulation Describe noise in information channel Describe Bandwidth in communication system

1.1 Types of Communication System

Communication is all about sending information to and receiving information from a distant location with using integrated equipment.

Basic Element of Communication

receiver information transmitter medium

noise

Channel
Source Sink

Media / Circuit Sender Receiver

In the model a message flows from the Source to a Sink . The source is can also be called the sender. The sink can be referred to as the receiver. The information or message flows between the source and sink through a transmission path or circuit.

1.2 Fundamental concept of communication

Type of Information Voice Picture / video Data

Medium (transmission channel): Voice Picture / video Data

Transmission Mode

Simplex (one way)

Half Duplex (two way one channel)

Duplex (two way two channel) Asymetrix (two way and different BW)

Capable of sending information in one direction only. Only Sender can send and only recipient can receive E.G : public address system, TV and broadcast radio.

Can go in both directions but in only one direction at a time. E.G: two way radio (walkie talkie)

Capable of sending information in both directions at the same time. Two directional of information travel are independent of each other. E.G: ordinary telephone systems, computer systems.

1.3 Definition of information, signal, channel, noise

The communication system exists to convey a message. Message comes from information source Information forms audio, video, text or data

Is a function representing a physical quantities. Mathematically, signal represented as a function of an independent variable, t. A signal is denoted by x(t)

Physical link between the communication parties E.G : wire . Digital bit stream.

Noise is a signal that unwanted , where break in on transmission and signal processing in communication system 2 categories - outside system - inside system

1.4 Needs for modulation

Short operating range
Audio signals having small frequency cannot be transmitted over long distance directly in to the space. However modulated signal can be transmitted over long distance

Poor radiation
At audio frequencies radiation is not practicable as efficiency of radiation is poor.

Mutual interferences
if low frequency signals are transmitted directly from different sources all of them would be mixed up by modulation message of different frequency levels can be transmitted.

Huge antenna requirement

modulation enables a low frequency a low frequency signal transmission over long distances through space with the help of a high frequency carrier wave. These carrier wave needs reasonably sized antenna can be reduced.

1.5 Types of modulation

A second line of text here

a process change signal's amplitude, where information signal change carrier signal amplitude process change frequency carrier signal by modulation signal

a form of modulation that represents information as variations in the instantaneous phase of a carrier wave.

1.6 Communication Medium such as wire, coaxial cable, fiber optic and space.

Communication medium is a material substance which can propagate energy waves.

1.7 Noise in information

Noise is a signal that unwanted , where break in on transmission and signal processing in communication system 2 categories - outside system - inside system Noise is measure in dB

1.8 Bandwidth in communication system

Bandwidth is the difference between its highest and lowest frequency components and expressed in Hertz (Hz)
