PEACE CORPS | GUATEMALA WELCOME BOOK 1
WELCOME LETTER
Congratulations on your invitation to pre-service training in Guatemala! I am sure you are excited and havemany questions. Peace Corps/Guatemala prepared this book to provide you with information, friendly advice, and resources to help you on your path of discovery. It will certainly not answer all of your questions and mayeven raise more. There are as many perspectives on Guatemala as there are people living here. With time, youwill find your own answers and definition of Guatemala. We do know that one of the most significant factorsin Volunteer satisfaction is the appeal of Guatemala and Guatemalans themselves.Peace Corps/Guatemala will offer you solid support, training, a well-designed project assignment, and acarefully selected site in which to live and work. In return, we have high expectations of the Volunteers whoaccept the challenge to serve. Please review this book carefully before deciding whether you are willing tomake the lifestyle adjustments and personal sacrifices necessary to represent the Peace Corps, as a Volunteer’sresponsibility goes well beyond his or her work assignment.A two-year commitment to the Peace Corps is not made easily or casually. It is a commitment you will need torenew frequently throughout your two years. You will be challenged in every way imaginable and your patience will be tried to its limits. But if you come with an open mind, a warm heart, a willingness to work, and a good sense of humor, you will do well. We offer you this opportunity to serve the people of Guatemalaand to have an experience that may change the way you view the world and yourself. If you feel you have the motivation, flexibility, and the right attitude to carry out the duties of a Peace CorpsVolunteer, then we look forward to you joining the dynamic group of Volunteers already serving inGuatemala. I look forward to meeting you down here.Sincerely,Martha KeaysCountry Director
