Dunlap Marine ConservationProgram at the University of Miami in2010.The document describes the Program’sobjectives, activities and results that weregenerated with your support. We hopeto continue your support in 2011.1. Advance marineconservation throughcutting-edge science andeducation projects 2. Provide studentswith opportunities for career development ina variety of disciplinesthrough practical hands-on eld experience 3. Advance publicunderstanding of oceanand coastal conservationissues through innovativeoutreach opportunitiesThe mission of the R.J. DunlapMarine Conservation Program isto advance ocean conservationand scientic literacy by combiningcutting-edge research andoutreach activities. High school, undergraduate and graduatestudents will have the opportunity toparticipate in exciting hands-on eldand virtual learning experiences.Additionally, eld and virtualexpeditions will expose studentsand teachers from across the globeto the importance of oceans intheir daily lives. They will learnabout the threats facing our watersand adjacent coasts, and explorethe solutions for conservation.Educational opportunities willespecially be made for those inland-locked communities as well asthose in traditionally underservedpopulations.Students may earn course creditsby conducting independent, interdisciplinary projects under the supervision of specialists andscientists who are leaders in their respective elds. The R.J. Dunlap Marine Conservation Program is a joint program of the RosenstielSchool of Marine & Atmospheric Science and the Leonard and Jayne AbessCenter for Ecosystem Science and Policy at the University of Miami. The RosenstielSchool offers one of the largest, most comprehensive marine and atmosphericprograms in the nation. Robust academics and in-depth scientic investigationare hallmarks of the School’s programs. The Abess Center creates innovativeinterdisciplinary initiatives that bridge the gap between hard science andenvironmental policy. The Abess Center is the nexus for exible undergraduateand graduate programs, which gives students the opportunity to learn in aproblem-solving context and gain substantial eld experience. This program provides interactions among high school, undergraduate andgraduate students, teachers and scientists within a research and mentoringsetting. It aims to foster environmental stewardship, student and public awarenessof the marine sciences. Information from the program is disseminated to boththe scientic community and the general public through peer-reviewed journals, scientic conferences, primary school presentations, presentations to civicorganizations, the media and the Internet.
