Hydraulics System

Objectives
Introduction to Hydraulics System Basic Idea of Hydraulics System Functionality Applications

Hydraulics
An area of science and engineering that focus on liquids as source of power. It derives power from pressurized liquids such as water and oil. All hydraulics system follows the same basic principles and hence they have same basic parts.

Force that is applied at one point is transmitted to another point using an incompressible fluid.

Simple hydraulic system consisting of two pistons and an oilfilled pipe connecting them

Liquids will transmit pressure throughout the liquid, regardless of the shape of the container. A force therefore can be applied wherever you want to apply it . Magnitude of force transferred is in direct proportion to the surface area (F = P*A)
Pressure = Force/Area

Hydraulic car brake

The force pushing down will put the liquid under pressure. The pressure is transmitted through the liquid and against the slave piston. The pressure causes the slave piston to exert a force where it is needed

Examples of the use of hydraulics

Lifts Bulldozers
Cranes

Fork lift trucks

Car jacks

Car brakes

Conclusion
Pressure is transmitted throughout a liquid. A small force is used to create a very big force. The force can be multiplied according the area of the pistons used to push down on the liquid.
