April 18, 2011 Gabriella Gomez Assistant Secretary for Legislative and Congressional Affairs U.S.

Department of Education 400 Maryland Ave. SW Washington, DC 20202-3100 Dear Ms. Gomez, Recently I received a letter from the president of Grove City College, Dr. Richard G. Jewell, asking for my assistance with a matter regarding the Department of Education's decision to deactivate the Federal School Code for Grove City College. In the letter, Dr. Jewell outlines the difficulties that Grove City College is facing due to the deactivation of this number. It is his belief that this decision is going to make it more difficult for many students to receive financial aid. I have attached the letter Dr. Jewell sent to my office for your review. I share the belief of Dr. Jewell that this decision to drop the Federal School Code for Grove City College is going to have a negative impact on the financial aid process. The new procedure that students must undergo has resulted in a complicated filing process, lengthy manual processing by public workers, and increased incompatibility with scholarships and other programs that will result in students missing out on opportunities afforded students at other institutions. Although I applaud your department's effort to streamline your operations, this decision has made the process of applying for financial assistance at Grove City College unnecessarily difficult. I thank you for being open about this decision with Grove City College and for your offer to reconsider the deactivation of Grove City's Federal School Code. I ask that you reactivate the Federal School Code so that the students of Grove City College can once again use that code to quickly and efficiently apply for financial aid. Sincerely, Pat Toomey U.S. Senator
