3 Human Rights Council Child Marriage Sponsors: Ethiopia, India, Germany, Hungary, Morocco, Romania, Turkey, Ukraine, United Kingdom, United States Signatories: Afghanistan, Canada, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Nepal, Niger, Serbia, Sierra Leone, Spain, Indonesia Bearing in mind that child marriages are denounced by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Noting that Article 16 the UDHR states that only people of full age may give their consent to marry, Conscious that Article 12 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child gives children the right to have a say in their marriage, Emphasizing that child marriages increase the probability of sexually transmitted infections, premature pregnancies, HIV/AIDS, and children dropping out of school, domestic violence and abuse, Stressing that child marriages often occur because families need the dowry for economic reasons, 1. Denounces all forms of child marriage; 2. Encourages the UN to set up a fund for health care and education in developing countries to assist in deceasing the quantity of child marriages; 3. Calls upon first world nations to support this fund by donating, as a minimum, .01% of their GDP to the program; 4. Establishes a program with authority to send teachers about the dangers and risks posed by premature marriage to countries affected by the issue; 5. Recommends that bride prices be forbidden in child marriage in countries that are still faced with the issue to remove the potential economic benefit; 6. Supports the giving of micro-loans to potential small businesses in order to improve the economies and unemployment rate of impoverished countries.
