Striking Out 22q with the Ryan andJenny Dempster Family Foundation
What is 22q? Is it a disease?Is it contagious? Well, whenChicago Cubs pitcher RyanDempster and his wie, Jen-ny, rst heard the news thattheir newborn daughter, Ri-ley had 22q11.2 DeletionSyndrome, or DiGeorge Syn-drome as it’s also common-ly reerred to as, they proba-bly had these and many otherquestions themselves. What22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome(or 22q or short) is not is adisease nor is it contagious.What it is, however, is a not-so-rare chromosomal abnor-mality or, in plain English, isa missing piece o the 22nd chromosome, thus the term deletion is used in part o its ull name.What it meant to the Dempsters, as it would have meant to any set o parents, is constant worry-ing about their newborn and a lot to learn about how to care or achild with 22q.
Astheybegantomeetother22qparents,whosestoriesofstruggle,heartache,adversity,andtriumphbegantotouchthem,itbecamemoreandmorecleartothemthattheyneededtodosomethingtohelpotherswhoperhapslackedtheresourcesthattheDempsterswerefortunateenoughtohaveaccessto.Thus,the“calling”thattheyhadbeensearchingforhadactu-allycometothem,andtheDempsterFamilyFoundationwasformed.Thisisn’taboutndingacure.Thereisnocureforgeneticabnor-malities.Thisisaboutworkingtogetbabiestestedatbirth,build-ingtreatmentclinicsandmedicalfacilitieswherethey’reneeded,andaboutgivingeveryparentthe
