The purpose of this research is to find out the factors that influence the Ghanaian consumer touse multiple SIM cards and impact of multiple SIM usage on the telecom industry. Quantitativeand qualitative research methods have been used to analyze data collected for this research.The type of research design employed in this research study is a survey. Close-ended questionswere administered to a sample size of three hundred (300) mobile phone users living in theGreater Accra Region. The questionnaires were administered mainly in Accra Mall and MakolaMarket. The choice of these research locations helped us to get data from a cross section of people in our society and to enable generalization of the findings in Ghana.Multiple SIM usage is predominantly practiced by the youth who have attained tertiary educationand earn between GH¢251 and GH¢350The research found that multiple SIM usage are influenced by factors such as overcomingpatchy or poor network coverage, saving money by making on-net calls, benefiting fromdiscounted or sales promotions and avoiding network congestion.In view of the findings it is imperative for telecom companies to consider charging low andcompetitive rates for all calls, improving network coverage and service quality and introducebetter sales promotion and incentives to customers. SIM card registration can be introduced togive an indication of relative market shares and growth of the telecom market.The research limitation was time constraint and lack of data
There is a need for more extensivesurveys to identify reasons for ownership of multiple SIM cards. The analysis can beincorporated into policy and regulatory decision making.
