Module Name: Nursing Practice 3Module Code: HLBN711

Aim: The aim of this module is to prepare nursing students for practice with people along the continuum of health, with a focus on nursing knowledge in relation to infant, child adolescent/youth and family health.

Learning Outcomes: On completion of this module the students will be able to: 1. Examine and explain the impact of health determinants for the infant, child youth and family. Demonstrates a comprehensive knowledge of nursing practice management for the infant, child, youth and family. Evaluate the role of the nurse, in the health promoting environment. Adapt the principles of cultural safety for nursing practice. Discuss clinical judgement for nursing practice through the continuum of health care.

Module Content: 1. The impact of health determinants for child youth and family y Introduction to regional demographics y Identify health status of the infant < 1 year, children 0-14years, young people 15-24 years and current infant child and youth health priorities y Overview of the underlying social and economic determinants which may contribute to health disparities y Recognise the marked socioeconomic and ethnic disparities in hospital admissions 2. A comprehensive knowledge of management of nursing practice for the infant, child youth and family y understand the nature of contemporary family y locate the family within contemporary society y To strengthen health and wellbeing utilising relational practice y Explore the role of advocacy in nursing children, young people and their families y Recognise the United Nations Declaration of Rights of the Child to nursing practice y Discuss the childrens, youth and parents needs when a child is hospitalised y Discuss the unique maternal health needs within the family

The role of the nurse in the health promoting environment y Identify key health issues during pregnancy, in infancy, childhood and youth y Understand the influence of the TamarikiOra (Well Child) framework on childrens health and wellbeing y Collaborative nursing roles working with school age children and youth y Health literacy 4. The principles of cultural safety for nursing practice y Discuss the culture of childhood and youth/adolescence y Contextualise and critique family centred care y Recognise that children, youth and family have a perspective of their lives, health and nursing care 5. Clinical judgement for nursing practice through the continuum of health care y Analyse relevant nursing knowledge / theories / skills in the delivery and documentation of safe effective client care. y Utilise evidence based practice y Evaluate family assessment frameworks Teaching and Learning Process: Learning strategies will introduce students to concepts from the nursing literature and scientific knowledge, research evidence, and clinical inquiry processes. Activities involving face to face, tutor lead, and interaction with an emphasis on being student-centred and student self -directed: classroom-based lectures with audio -visual support, tutorials, enquiry -based activities, investigations, laboratory and group activities.
