Safety Integrity Level
Safety Instrumented Systems
Classified and evaluated instrumentationin the process industry, an important contribution to the safety of personnel, the environment and equipment.
In most countries, safety requirementsfor man, equipment and the environment, follow state-of-the-art technology, as abinding and legal requirement. Thisstandardis IEC 61508* (Functional safety of electrical/electronic/programmableelectronic safety-related systems).
* also avaliable as DIN EN 61508
What is SIL?
Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) aredesigned and used to prevent or mitigatehazardous events to protect people or theenvironment or prevent damage to processequipment.Safety Integrity Level means risk reductionto a tolerable level. The IEC 61508 standardspecifies both the risk assessment (riskgraph) and the measures to be taken inthe design of safety functions consistingof sensor, logic solver and actuator. Thesemeasures include “fault avoidance”(systematic faults) and “fault control”(systematic and random faults). This generic standard specifies the pertinentrequirements for components and systemsused in safety functions. It also enablesapplication sector specific standards to bedeveloped (e.g. IEC 61511 „Functionalsafety: Safety instrumented systems for theprocess industry sector“). For example, the IEC 61511 defines selection criteriafor components of safety functions, like“prior use” demonstration of sensors andactuators.
When is IEC 61508 used?
IEC 61508 applies for all applications where electrical, electronic orprogrammable electronic safety-relatedsystems are used to perform safety functions. It covers all those applications where system malfunctions have adecisive effect on the safety of personnel, the environment and equipment concerned.
