Southern Arts Society kicked off our first ever Earth and Fire pottery festival in style with many of the potters on hand to meet the public. Live music was provided by the Log Cabin String Band. Pottery is sold on a cash and carry basis (or visa and mc). Traditional folk ware pottery is available along with more whimsical artistic creations. A BIG Thank you to: Ben Davison, our resident potter, for giving us a fantastic hand thrown punch bowl and ladle for our receptions. To Ben Hubbard for restoring our old railroad baggage cart that was rusted and rotted. To Larry Chappell & Robert Bradshaw for pouring the concrete pad that had to be done before we could put the cart in place. It was a very hot day that day so CHEERS for stepping up. Thanks All!!

~ GRANTS AWARDED ~
Two Grants were awarded to SASI from Kings Mountain Travel & Tourism. First was $1,000 for our Earth & Fire Pottery Festival. This is a matching grant so SASI has spent 1,000 from our own funds to get this festival off and running at a rapid speed. This grant paid for advertising, postcards, signage, food, display materials and entertainment. The second grant is to refurbish the SASI Courtyard facing the railroad tracks. This will help to get the fence painted, a patio poured, plants, and everything to make a relaxing spot for artists and visitors to view the trains. This one was not a matching grant.

NEW FUNDRAISER
SASI is looking for 12 generous donors to give $100 each for a music/sound system. Jo Ann Ford has researched the best possible deal for us. We want to give visitors a warm welcome throughout the depot as they come to exhibits and events. Mail your check or drop it by the depot designate it for the music system.

~ I AM WOMAN ~
Awards were presented at a reception on May 15 at the Art Center. Judge Linda Luise Brown of Charlotte selected the winning art work and had these comments I am very impressed with this selection of evocations of the expression I AM WOMAN and applaud the community that produced such diverse art. All three winners have a great sense of composition. Both first and second place are equally competent. First Place ($200) Three Libras by Steven Pruitt has such great technique and the command of lighting is awesome. Second Place ($150) Leah Days quilt My Cup Runneth Over is also technically brilliant. Third Place ($75) Chris Beaver Crest Fallen Constellations is a striking blend of classical and modern. Merit Awards ($50 each) went to Lori McAdams Canning Tomatoes, P.L. Rhodes Line Drawing II Linda Vista Mother and Jo Ann Ford So Very Tired.
