3.7 divider symbol, character or physical border used to separate the sections of the VIN or to indicate its limits (beginning and end) 4 4.1 General requirements Characters

Only the following Arabic numerals and Roman letters may be used to compose the VIN: a) b) numerals 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0; letters A B C D E F G H J K L M N P R S T U V W X Y Z.

NOTE: The letters I, O and Q shall not be used. 4.2 Dividers

4.2.1 The dividers may be used at the limits of each line (see 4.3.2) and between sections of the VIN; however, they shall not appear in the vehicle documentation. 4.2.2 The dividers to be used are determined by the manufacturer/assembler; however, symbols or characters which might resemble the Arabic numerals or Roman letters of the VIN and which could be confused with them shall not be used. 4.3 VIN display

4.3.1 In printed documents, the VIN shall be shown on one line, without blanks and without dividers between the sections. 4.3.2 When stamped or fitted in a vehicle, the VIN may be represented on one or two lines, without blanks and without omitting any of its sections. 4.4 Location

4.4.1 The VIN shall be located on the right side of the vehicle and, if possible, on the front half, in an easily visible location. Its location shall be described in the Owners Manual or equivalent publication. 4.4.2 When, for regulatory reasons, the VIN shall be readable from the outside of the vehicle, it shall be located inside the passenger compartment adjacent to the windshield pillars. 4.5 Attachment

4.5.1 There are two alternative methods for the attachment of the VIN in the vehicle, which may be adopted simultaneously at the discretion of the manufacturer/assembler: a) Stamping directly onto an integral part of the vehicle, such as the chassis structure, or in the case of vehicles with an integrated body/chassis structure, a part that cannot easily be removed or replaced; b) Stamping onto a plate which is permanently affixed to the vehicle according to paragraph a).

NOTE: The stamping referred to in paragraphs a) and b) may be in high or low relief. 4.5.2 The characters used when stamping the VIN shall have a minimum height of 7 mm if stamped directly onto the vehicle (as per 4.5.1 a), or 4 mm if stamped onto a plate (as per 4.5.1 b).

The WMI consists of three alphabetical or numerical characters, signifying the following: a) first position: identifies the geographic area (continent). If necessary, more than one character may be assigned to the same geographic region; b) second position: identifies the country within a specific geographic area. If necessary, more than one character may be assigned to the same country; c) third position: identifies the manufacturer/assembler within the country. If the manufacturer/assembler produces fewer than 500 vehicle units per year, this position shall be filled with the numeral 9; the manufacturer/assembler shall then be identified in positions 12, 13 and 14 of the VIN (see 5.2.2.4). 5.2.2 Designation

This code is assigned to the vehicle manufacturer/assembler in order to allow his identification. When used in conjunction with the other two sections comprising the VIN, this code ensures the uniqueness of the identification number for all vehicles manufactured in the world for a period of 30 years. If used, the WMI may characterize the manufacturer/assembler according to the following: a) b) c) the country in which the production entity is located; the country in which the entity responsible for the project is located; the country in which the parent company of the manufacturer/assembler is located.

5.2.2.1 All countries in which vehicles are manufactured/assembled shall be assigned a combination of the first two characters by an international organization authorized by ISO. The organization currently performing this task is the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) (USA).

5.2.2.2 The third and final character of the WMI code is assigned by national organizations to manufacturers/assemblers located in the country in question, and is communicated to the international organization. 5.2.2.3 In Brazil, the three-character combination constituting the WMI is assigned through the Supreme Federal Executive Traffic Body [rgo Mximo Executivo de Trnsito da Unio]. 5.2.2.4 The national organization is also responsible for assigning the characters that are to occupy positions 12, 13 and 14 of the VIN, which identify manufacturers/assemblers producing fewer than 500 vehicle units per year. 5.2.2.5 The WMI code assigned to a manufacturer/assembler shall not be assigned to any other manufacturer/assembler for at least 30 years following its last use. 5.3 Vehicle descriptor section (VDS)

The VDS consists of six alphabetical or numerical characters. The coding and sequence of this section are to be determined by the manufacturer/assembler. The manufacturer/assembler is not obliged to use all of the positions in this section, but shall fill any unused position with an alphabetical or numerical character, as no position may be left blank. 5.4 Vehicle indicator section (VIS)

The VIS consists of eight characters, as follows: a) alphabetical or numerical characters in positions 10 to 13 of the VIN; b) numerical characters only in positions 14 to 17 of the VIN. In conjunction with the VDS section, the VIS ensures that the VIN of all vehicles produced by a given manufacturer/assembler remains unique for a period of 30 years. 5.4.1 Composition of the VIS

a) The first position of the VIS is the 10th position of the VIN, and the character in this position corresponds to the year of manufacture or model year of the vehicle (see Table 1); b) The second position of the VIS is the 11th position of the VIN, and the character in this position, determined by the manufacturer/assembler, identifies the factory and location in which the vehicle was produced; c) Positions 3 to 8 of the VIS correspond to positions 12 to 17 of the VIN, and the characters in these positions individually identify each vehicle produced by means of a production sequential number, in accordance with the characteristics attributed by the manufacturer in the VDS. NOTE: Any fields in this section that do not contain meaningful characters shall be filled with the numerical character 0 (zero).
