DBQ Essay Directions
Your essay should be a direct response to the DBQ question:What made Gandhi, King, and Mandela: What Made Non-Violence Work?The documents provided have been selected specifically to provide many possible answers to thisquestion. You must identify at least three characteristics or qualities that contributed to thesuccess of non-violent movements in India, America, and South Africa in an attempt to understandwhat the fundamental traits needed for a non-violent movement to work. Your essay must showthat you examined the provided documents and organized in your thoughts so you could providean intelligent answer to the question and show how the documents support your viewpoint. After putting the documents in buckets or analytical categories, some common themes betweenall three movements should become apparent. Choose three of these as a basis for theorganization of your essay (bucket 1 becomes body paragraph 1 and so forth).Use the DBQ Essay Outline to create an organizational structure to your essay. I recommendworking on the essay outline in this order:1.

Body Paragraphs
: Choose evidence intentionally to support topic sentence and theme of theparagraph.2.

After completing your outline, you are required to find two students to peer-review your outline. The student reviewing your paper will need one of your peer review worksheets and a copy of your outline or a rough draft. You will need to turn in both peer reviews with your essay to showthat you had your essay plan reviewed by peers.

In your body paragraphs, you are required to cite specific evidence and show how that evidencesupports your interpretation. For this paper, you only to write the document letter as a citation. For example, if I reference the image of Gandhi salting the tail of the British lion, I would follow it with the document letter in parenthesis and placing sentence ending punctuation after the citation.Example:
Conveying images of cooperation and brotherhood were important to Gandhi. This is depicted in thecartoon where Gandhi is shown salting the tail of the lion; this symbolizes Gandhi reaching out to hisenemy (Doc. P).
