A Need to Develop Global Leader

Competent global leaders are critical for the future success of all multinational organizations (Caligiuri, P. & Di Santo, V., 2001). According to a research done by Gregersen, H. B., Morrison, A. J. & Black, J. S. (1998), organizations with comprehensive development systems performed better than those without such systems. However, most organizations do not have comprehensive systems for developing global leaders.

A Need to Develop Global Leader

Most companies claim that they need more global leaders: 85% do not think they have an adequate no. global leaders (Gregersen, H. B., Morrison, A. J. & Black, J. S., 1998). Talent individuals need accelerated development, exposure to different cultures, appropriate rewards and opportunities to keep them learning and growing (Jacobs, D. ,2005).

What Kind of Competence to Develop

Caligiuri, P. & Di Santo, V. (2001) suggested eight development goals:
Ability to transact business in another country Ability to change leadership style based on the situation Knowledge of the organizations worldwide business structure Knowledge of international business issues Personal Network of professional contacts worldwide Increase of Individuals Openness Increase of Individuals Flexibility Reduce of Individuals ethnocentrism

How to Develop
Scholars agreed that providing individuals exposure to work in other countries and culture is a key ingredient for successfully helping potential leaders to establish awareness of diversity (Jacobs, D. ,2005; Caligiuri, P. & Di Santo, V., 2001). It is believed that necessary knowledge might be developed through global assignment. Individual can learn to be more sensitive to the challenges of working in another country (Caligiuri, P. & Di Santo, V., 2001).

How to Develop
 Gregersen, H. B., Morrison, A. J. & Black, J. S. (1998) proposed 4 effective strategies in their research:
Travel Provide potential global leaders with travel opportunity to another country to experience its culture, economy, political system, market, etc. Teams Establish teams in which individuals with diverse backgrounds and perspectives work together. By contrasting views and values, potential leaders learn to think globally. Training By providing a structured learning environment to participants from worldwide operations, combined both classroom and action learning projects from the real worldwide business. Transfers (Most Powerful!) Provide overseas assignments/ expatriation, which is recognized as the most influential learning experience for work and personal development
