Ceramics of the end of Bronze age and the beginning of the Old Iron epoch from the top
of Treskavec (Teteven city, Central North Bulgaria)
In the material are presented samples of hand made Before Rome ceramics, discovered during
the clearing of antique apartments on the top of Treskavec in 2008. This ceramics includes the
fragments of bowls, big vessels for food keeping, cups, jugs and other (table. I-III). Between them we
can distinguish 2 groups, which have more important meaning for the dating process. From the one
side, they are bowls fragments, whose concaved entrances are ornamented by decorations and vertical
grooves (table.I, 1-4), and are especially relevant for the early stage of Old Iron epoch.
From the other side, two fragments of wall (spherical form) and one - of the lower part of
vertical handle of vessel (jug, cup, cantharus), having the carved decorations, filled by white material,
presenting the geometrical figures - triangles and rhombuses, closing clean spaces striated, intersecting
between itself (table. II, 32-32b). These fragments are prototypes of the examples of the ceramic
groups of Late Bronze epoch (Govora- late Tay - Zimnichya - Cherkovna- Plovdiv). In the article are
considered both possibilities:
1) found ceramics reflects continuous existence of some habitations in a transitional of Late
Bronze period- beginning of Old Iron epoch and this ceramics complex should be referred to XIII/XIIX century BC
2) While constructing ancient building were blasted two cultural layer - one of the Late
Bronze epoch ( - century BC), and other - from the early phase of Old Iron epoch. In this case
dating of the last must be more general - XI- century BC, because bowls with concaved grooved
entrances are characteristic feature of the whole period.
