Wonky Zigzag Pillow Tutorial

By teaginny designs www.teaginnydesigns.blogspot.com This fun, improvisational block creates a wonky zigzag shape You can easily use shape. charm packs and/or jelly roll strips to make these blocks. They are also a great way to feature your favorite scraps!

For an 18 square pillow cover you will need: 3/8 yard solid, medium gray Kona

Scraps equaling 36 rectangles 2 x 5, 12 of each of your three color choices 18 x 18 muslin 18 x 18 batting yard binding Just over a 1/2 yard for backing, depending on your preferred method

Cut: 36 3 squares solid gray 36 2 x 5 rectangles, 12 of each color 18 x 18 square muslin 3 2 x WOF binding fabric I made an envelope back using one 18 x 11 rectangle and one 18 x 14 rectangle

Instructions: Sew a rectangle strip onto one edge of your gray squares at an angle. Audition the angle to the gray square by laying it across the top.

When it suits you, flip it over so the wrong side it up, and sew, using the edge of the fabric on top to create a 1/4 seam.

Press, seams facing away from the solid gray. This is important for a later step.

Turn the block so the wrong side faces up. Using the gray square as your guide, trim away the excess orange fabric.

With the right side facing up, fold back the orange strip. Using the seam allowance as your guide, trim away the solids gray fabric underneath.

Repeat with all 36 blocks, varying the angle of the rectangles. This will create the wonk in your wonky zigzag!

Lay out the blocks to create a zigzag. The gray portion of the block will alternate from being oriented on the left side of a block to being on the top of the next block.

Sew together in rows, then the join the rows to complete the pillow top.

Layer the top with batting and the muslin square. Baste. Quilt as desired. I finished my pillow with an envelope back, but use the back and opening of your choice. Layer the back of your choice, wrong side up with the top, right side up. Pin and zigzag around the edges. Bind just as you would a quilt.

I hope you enjoyed this simple tutorial and have lots of fun with your own wonky zigzag!! This block is easy to enlarge just begin with larger squares and scrap strips. The construction will be the same.
