Description: Drawing and painting one are courses designed to introduce upper school WCS students to the basic principles of two-dimensional art and design. Students will study the elements and principles of design within the context of creative exploration and problem solving and will apply them in their two-dimensional artwork using a variety of dry and wet art materials, techniques and practices. Emphasis is on development and progression of basic drawing and painting skills. Students will also be introduced to art careers. Class objectives: 1. Students will recognize and employ the elements of art and principles of design. 2. Students will learn to appreciate and understand the artwork of classical and contemporary artists. 3. Students will become familiar with art history, art movements, experimental techniques and art careers. 4. Students will plan and produce artworks using a variety of media and techniques. 5. Students will enhance their technological skills. 6. Students will constructively critique and discuss artworks in class and on-line. 7. Students will develop their arts learning through ongoing work in sketchbook. Learning Strategies: Hands-on artmaking; in-class group activities; art discussions and critiques; sketchbook assignments; and presentations. Expectations, Rules, and Regulations: a. Attendance and class participation: Be present ON TIME to the art class to avoid unnecessary interruptions and come prepared to actively contribute in classroom discussions and activities. If absent, student is responsible for missed assignments, class information, etc. You will be expected to take the initiative with the art teacher in arranging to make up missed work. b. Assignments. Students are expected to maintain a personal sketchbook to be used for developing ideas and practicing drawing skills. c. Grading: Grading is based on the completion of art projects, sketchbook assignments, group projects, your willingness to try, class participation and critiques, working habits and behavior, and participations in art contests/shows. d. Clean up procedures: Students are responsible to clean up their work area and materials after every art project and to respect and care of ALL the art materials and art tools. Students will be encouraged to view their classmates as team players, helping each other to maintain classroom equipment and materials clean and organized before leaving classroom e. Cell phones. Cell phones are allowed for research, emergency calls or listening to music during art production. NO TEXTING OR SOCIAL NETWORKING IS ALLOWED IN THE CLASSROOM.
