Prof.LaurenceShifmanisknownintheworldofresearchasamemberattheInternationalteamofresearchersoftheshelvedscrolls.Hestudiedandpublishedbooksaboutthesecretsofthescrolls.Heisoneofthetwoeditorsof"TheEncyclopediaofIsraelReligion"-whichwillbepublished,withGod'shelp,untiltheyear2000-andoneofthethreeeditorsofthenewjournal:"DeadSeaDiscoveries"[=thediscoveriesfromJudeaDesert].Thecriticismconcerningthescrolls,onlyhelpedtobringthemintothepublic'sknowledge,andurged-ontheirrelease.Prof.Shifmanwasalsoamemberofthecommissionforcelebrating50yearstoresearchof"theDeadSeaScrolls",whichtook-placelastsummeratJerusalem.Weparticipateinthecelebrationbyreleasingtheinterviewwithhim-whichtook-placeathisofficein"theNewYorkUniversity"inNewYork.

A.B.:WearehonoredtointerviewProf.LaurenceShifman,fromtheJudaism-sciencesunitintheNew-YorkUniversity,alsoknownasaquintessentialresearcheroftheDeadSeaScrolls.Lately,anumberofresearchersholdtheopinionthattherewereSamaritansinKumran,orat-leastaparty,whichitsmembersconductedastheSamaritans'customs.Thatexplainstheexistenceofscrolls,whichareformulatedastheSamaritan'sversionoftheTorah,or-astheresearchersnamesthem:"aSamaritan-imitationform".MayweopenwiththisamusingepisodeofSamaritanslivingabstinencelifeinKumran,andtherevealingofthedocumentsinMetsadah,nearthedaysoftheSecond-Templedestruction,provingpresenceofSamaritansoldiersamongthefewlastwarriorsinMetsadah.
 
Prof.LaurenceShifman:Theproblemis-thatwestilldon'tknowwhethertherewerepartiesinKumran,orjustscrolls,ormay-bethescrollswerealsobroughttoKumranfromotherplaces.Ifindeedthescrollswerewrittenthere,thosewhorepresentsome-wayinJudaism,wedon'tknowifthiskindofpartyhadlivedinKumran,orjustthescrollswerebroughttothere.SpeakingabouttheSamaritanmatter-wearereferringtothescrollsoftheTorah.Thosescrollsarecompatibleintheirstyleandharmonization[textsmatching]-totheversion,whichtheSamaritanshave.Also,someversionsareaSamaritan-imitationform,whichmeans:thematters-ofsettingupalteronMt.Gerizimor"theplacethathechose"insteadofJerusalem-arenotmentionedthere.Mostoftheresearchersthinkthattheversionalterations-concerningthechosenplace,intheSamaritanversion-aretendentious,whereasthesimilaralterationsandtheharmonizationintheKumranscrollsarenottendentious,eventhough,mostlytheyareverysimilartotheversionthattheSamaritanspossess.
