The United States has an opportunity to be energy independent and to increase its use of clean, safe, and sustainable power. We need to secure this bright future by setting out a positive American strategy today. We know fusion works. Fusion is taking place in laboratories all over the world, including in the United States. It is the process that powers the Sun and all the stars. The key step is to turn this science fact into a commercial product. We know, though, that there are many significant hurdles to reach this goal, many involving large engineering issues. We, as Americans, have faced such challenges before and we have overcome them all. But the United States runs the risk of losing the race to commercialize fusion to China or South Korea. America could be forced to buy its energy from foreign countries that may not share its values or have its interests at heart.
