wereun-veiledinasneakpreview.Therenovationfeaturedarefurbishedgalleryspaceandshopaswellasofficeswhichwereentirelymade-overwithafreshinteriordesigncoordinatedbyCalvinLau.Aftergettingachancetolookatthefacilitiesandenjoysomerefresh-ments,theapproximately100guestscongregatedintheGrandballroom.

ExecutiveDirector,GloriaTai,welcomedguests.Then,Tzu-ChenLee,PresidentoftheBoardofDi-rectorsfor2006,spokeaboutherhopesfortheChineseCultureFoun-dationandCenterduringherpresi-dentialterm.ShethenintroducedVivianChiangwhotalkedaboutthehallmarkprogramfortheyear,theChineseOperaHeritageProject.FollowingMs.Chiang'spreviewonthisexcitingproject,Dr.ColinWongannouncedthepubliclaunchoftheFoundation's
CampaignforANewBeginning.
Dr.Wong,whoservesasCampaignCo-ChairpersonwithBoardMemberDr.RollandLowe,outlinedimportantinforma-tionabouttheCampaignwhichcapitalizesonthismajorturningpointinthehistoryoftheCenter.Dr.WongpointedoutthatthisisanewbeginningfortheFoundationandtheCenter,notonlyintermsofthemakeoverofitsfacilitiesbutalsoinitshopestosustain,renew,andintroducebothpreviousandnever-before-seenprogrammingthroughanenhancedendowment.DonorswillhaveanopportunitytocontributetotheCampaignthroughgifts,pledges,andstocks.TheCampaignalsofeaturesthe

OnbehalfoftheBoardofDirectorsandstaffoftheCenter,Iwouldliketowelcomeeveryoneback.Sincetherenovation,we'vemovedtoatemporarylocationforthepast6months,andwehavefinallyre-turned.IwouldliketocommendourpastPresidentJonasMiller,andour2005BoardofDirectorsfortheirhardworkanddedication.Thesuccessesofthepastyearwouldnothavebeenpossiblewithoutthem.Iwanttobuildonthosesuccesses.AsIbeginmyterm,IhavemanygoalsfortheCenterthatIwouldliketoseeaccomplished.Wehavejustlaunchedourmulti-year

amajorfundraisingeffortthatcoincideswithourmovetorefurbishedfacili-ties.TheCampaignembodiesourhopesfortheCenter'sfuture,notonlybecauseofourrenovatedspace,butalsobecauseitwillen-ableustoseetheimplementationofanumberofexcitingnewinitiatives.First,throughthemoneyraisedinthe

wewouldliketoenhancetheexist-ingendowmenttoensurethecon-tinuanceandimprovementofourongoingprograms,likeourpopu-larMandarinlanguageclassesandourhighlyacclaimed

program.Wealsoplantousethosefundstointroducenewprogramsandrevivesomeoldfa-vorites.Theseprogramsarecon-sistentwithourmissiontoengageouryouthandsocietyintheirun-derstandingandappreciationofChineseartandculture.Oneofthemosttalked-aboutpro-gramswearelaunchinginAprilofthisyearistheNewChineseOperaHeritageProject.

Almostsevenmonthsago,wemovedtheCenter'sentireoperationoutofour32yearsoldfacilitiesintoanearbyofficebuilding.Althoughweenjoyedtheluxuriesoftheof-fice-buildingenvironment,astimewentby,wegrewhomesick!Duringthatperiod,wecontinuedservingthecommunitythebestwecould,maintainingallourclassesandevenaddedabrownbaglunchMandarinclass.Thoughwedidnothaveagallerytodoexhibitions,wepresentedour
RusticSplendors:KilnTreasuresfromShiwan
exhibitatanearbyfacilityco-sponsoringwiththePacificHeritageMuseum.Over5,000visitorsincludingmanyschoolchildrenhaveenjoyedtheseexquisiteworksofartsincetheopeningonAugust25,2005.Myvisitshomebecamemorefre-quentasrenovatedprogressed.Manyskepticsadvisedmetoplanfortheworstsincerenovationsusu-allytakelongerthanplanned.Well,theywerewrong.Wemovedback

weekshyofsevenmonths!Allofusattheofficewereelatedtobehomeevenwhenwehadtoshareonechair.Soon,furniture,storedrecordsandmerchandisewereun-packed,andbeforeweknewit,wewerecompletingourfirstevent,ourWelcomeHomeReceptionforourmembers,followedbyourannualSpringFestival,InSearchofRootspresentationandaChineseinstru-mentconcert.Manyhoursofplanningwereputinduringthosefewmonths.Wehopethatwecancontinuetopreserveandrefineourpastprogramsaswellasintroducemoreyouthorientedpro-grams.WealsoplantodevelopmorelecturesandseminarsonChi-neseart,tradition,religion,history,music,performances,etc.
