Question 3 The houses on Main Street are numbered consecutively from 1 to 150. How many house numbers contain at least one digit 7?

i. Understand the problem - House numbers from 1 to 150. - How many house numbers contain at least one digit 7?

ii. Devise a plan - Polyas strategies used: Make an orderly list Draw a diagram

iii. Carry out the plan - Make an orderly list

- Draw a diagram (Refer to the course work on page 7)

Question 6 Sixteen toothpicks are arranged as shown. Remove four toothpicks so that only four congruent triangles remain.

i. Understand the problem - Remove four toothpicks so that only four congruent triangles remain.

ii. Devise a plan - Polyas strategies used Use symmetry Guess and check

iii. Carry out the plan - Use symmetry After four toothpicks are removed, four congruent triangles are formed out of 10 toothpicks and two other toothpicks formed a symmetrical line as shown below.

- Guess and check After making some guessing and checking, there are lots of possibilities can be found. The first trial and the fourth trial are succeeded. On the other hand, the second trial and the third trial do not satisfy the question inquiry.

Question 9 I went into a store and spent half of my money and then $20 more. I went into a second store and spent half of my money and then $20 more. Then I had no money left. How much money did I have when I went into the first store?

i. Understand the problem - No money left in the end. - How much money did I have when I went into the first store?

ii. Devise a plan - Polyas strategies used: Work backward Solve an equation

iii. Carry out the plan - Work backward My current amount of money = $0 Before I spent $20 in the second store = $20 Before I spent half of my money in the second store = $20 x 2 = $40 Before I spent $20 in the first store = $40 + $20 = $60 My initial amount of money before I spent half of it in the first store = $60 x 2 = $120

- Solve an equation Let the initial amount of money be x.

The initial amount of money, x = $120
