Description

This is an historical fiction happening in medieval europe during the late middle ages. It tells a spy story contempory to the inventor of modern intelligence services, King Louis XI. It is the first chapter of Etienne de Beaurepaire’s life and adventutre as spy for Louis XI, King of France during the second half of the fifteenth century.

In the year 1456, King Charles VII of France is in conflict with his son, the future king Louis XI and Etienne is a young broken lord, whose father served in the army of the Prince. He is a clerk and lives a quiet life which does not fit with his temper.

Consecutively to the invasion of Dauphiné by the King, the Prince is held prisoner in his own castle and waits for his deportation. Monsieur de Quetille, his body guard, has no one to rely on for planning an escape. All his men are either arrested or under surveillance. Etienne, whose father remained faithful to the prince and who has the reputation to be adventurous, could to be their chance. Quetille sends him out to seek support from the other European Princes. Etienne will travel throughout medieval Europe, from Grenoble in Dauphiné up to Louvain in Flanders, and then will come back whilst tailed by the men of the King of France. He will manage to be introduced to the Duke of Burgundy and will meet with his two companions, Godfroy and Maillard. His ultimate goal is to organise the escape of his Prince. For that purpose Etienne will bribe a company faithful to the king and use it to fight the King own men during a hunting party that historically happened on the 30th of August 1456.

The Runaway is a story of Intelligence Services during European Middle Ages as well as of the men who fought and died for gold and King. It is a journey into the dark times of the European civilisation when it was ruled by warlords.
