WAJ31 05 Numerical Literacy

Remark:

This activity can be duplicated for mass and volume of liquid. As an example,
pupils can be asked to estimate and measure the mass of a book using pebbles

as non-standard units. For volume of liquid, pupils can be asked to estimate and measure the amount of water to fill a cup using a spoon as the nonstandard unit.

Activity

Recoqnize a metre

Children's Learning Outcome:

. .

To recognize a metre.

Materials: Metre stick / Metre rule

Procedure:

1. Ask pupils to estimate and show the length of one metre with their two hands.

2. Check pupils' estimates with a metre stick or a metre rule. 3. In small groups, pupils search for lengths in the classroom that are almost one
metre long, with the help of a metre stick or a metre rule.

4. Pupils share their findings with the class. 5. Ask pupils to estimate how many of their footprints are equal to 1 metre as
shown below:

(**let them step on mahjong paper and leave (trace) the footprints onto it)

6. 7.

Let pupils check their estimates with the help of a metre stick or metre rule. Discuss the following questions with pupils:
