PART-A(Marks:32)

1. Design a compression member of two channels toe-to-toe. The length of the com- pression member is 10m and carries a load of 1500 kN. The width over the backs of channels is 400mm. The channels are connected by battens.

(a) Sectional elevation of the column
(b) Cross section of the column.
[16]

2. A simply supported welded plate girder having a span of 14 m has to support concentrated loads of 100 kN each from cross girder at 2 m intervals. In addition, the girder has to carry a uniformly distributed load of 18 kN/m including its own self weight. Design the cross-section of the plate girder and suitable stiffeners. The design should conform to I.S.:800-1984. Draw dimensioned sketches showing the longitudinal elevation and cross-section of the girder.

[16]
PART-B (Marks:16x3=48)
3. (a) Explain about intermittent fillet welds?

(b) A circular plate 125mm in diameter is welded to another plate along the periphery by 6mm fillet weld. Find the maximum twisting moment that can be applied to the plate in plane, if the stress in the weld is not to exceed 110 N/mm2

[6+10]
4. (a) Discuss about effective span and deflection limitations as per I.S. code?

(b) Design a simply supported beam to carry a uniformly distributed load of 44 kN/m. The effective span of the beam is 8m. The effective length of the compression flange of the beam is also 8m. The ends of the beam are not free to rotate at the bearings.

[6+10]

5. Design a slab base for a column section ISHB 350 carries an axial load of 1500 kN. The permissible bearing pressure on concrete is 5 N/mm2. Safe bearing capacity of soil is 200 kN/m2.

6. A tension member of truss, carrying a tensile force of 25 kN, meets the principal rafter, carrying a compressive force of 100 kN, at right angles. The panel to length along the principal rafter is 2.4 m. Design both the members, using IS:1161 grade Yst 240 tubes. Also, design the welded joint for the members, taking the allowable stress in fillet weld as 110 N/mm2.

[16]
7. Design a riveted plate girder spanning 15 m and supporting two 500 kN concen-
trated loads at third points.

PART-A(Marks:32)

1. A column is subjected to an axial load of 750 kN. The beam connected to the flange of the column has an eccentric load of 150 kN and the beam connected to the web of the column has an eccentric load of 60kN. Design the column for an effective length of 4 meters? Draw

(a) Side view of the column
(b) Plan view of the column.
[16]

2. Design a welded plate girder of 30 m span to the support a live load of 75 kN/m uniformly distributed over the span. Adopt permissible stress as per I.S.:800-1984. Draw the longitudinal elevation, cross-section and plane of the girder.

[16]
PART-B (Marks:16x3=48)
3. (a) A tie bar 120×10mm is to be connected to the other tie bar of size 120mm×14mm.

If the tie bars are to be loaded by a pull of 160kN. Find out the size of end fil- lets such that the stresses in the end fillets are the same. Take the permissible stresses in the weld =110N/mm2.

(b) The tension member of a truss consists of two angels of 50mm× 80mm× 8mm. If the two angles are welded on either side of the gussets plate at the joint, design the joint. Axial tension in the member is 150 kN. Permissible shear stress in the weld material is 110 N/mm2. Use 6mm fillet welds. [8+8]

4. (a) With neat sketches explain compound beams?

(b) A simply supported beam is to support a uniformly distributed load of 70 kN/m exclusive of the self weight. Clear span is 8m. Design a plated rolled steel beam ISMB 500 @ 0.869 kN/m and 10mm thick plates are only available. The compression flange of the beam is laterally unrestrained

[7+9]

5. A column section ISHB 300 @ 630 N/m with one cover plate 400 mm× 20 mm on either side is carrying an axial load of 2800 kN inclusive of self weight of base and column. Design a gusseted base. The allowable bearing pressure in concrete is 4 N/mm2. The allowable bending stress in base plate is 185 N/mm2.
