O
n May 3rd, 2011,I stood beside COPE 378 Secretary-Treasurer Lori Mayhew and signed my oath o oce aspresident. I was rst elected to COPE 378’s ExecutiveCouncil soon ater I started with ICBC in 1995, and elected asto the Executive Board in 2001. I’m proud to have played a partin the remarkable changes COPE 378 has undergone duringthat time. We have grown, we have skilled up, and we havemodernized. I’m honoured to continue this tradition o evolu-tion under my leadership. Our newly elected Executive Council met or a specialtwo-day meeting in May and it was clear we were ready tohit the ground running. We have a potent mix o seasoned, knowledgeable members and energetic, creative young peo-ple among our activists and leaders. This incredible group opeople is ready to take on the challenges that ace this organi-zation and our membership. There is no denying we ace challenges. The last scal yearwas hard on our operational nances, as you will see rom ouryearly Financial Report supplement included in this magazine. The report outlines the perect storm that converged on ournances, o legal costs brought by employers, operational re-structuring, the global nancial crisis, and public sector wagereezes. But, it’s not all bad news. Our Deence Fund recentlyhit a historic $20 million. The contrast gave us pause, and weare looking at ways we can stabilize our operations while pro-viding optimal services to our members.COPE 378 weathered the nancial storm in part becauseo the diversity o bargaining units that make up this union. To ortiy this resilience we must expand our membership.I’m committed to making organizing acornerstone to our union’s operations. Each department will have a role to playin nding new members and expandingCOPE 378’s advocacy and protection. Asour union grows, so will our infuence andeectiveness.I want to thank you or giving me theopportunity to ocus on these priorities aspresident o COPE 378. Your support makesthis work possible and I look orward to thechange we will make together.
