On Saturday 3 May Lead-ing Cadet Murray repre-sented the Unit and theentire Sea Cadet Corpsplaying in the nationalmassed bands at Twick-enham for the Army vs.Navy rugby match.Leading Cadet Murray joined approximately100 cadets from allaround the country inplaying a 30 minutepresentation to help thecrowd warm up theirvoices before the start ofthe game, culminating inthe National Anthem.Although she is alsoskilled in the side drumand bugle through hertime in the band at theUnit, Leading CadetMurray played the saxo-phone at this event. In total the crowd for thematch was estimated tobe 50,500, making thisone of the largest eventsthat a Sea Cadet bandhas ever played to.All those present, includ-ing the Unit Training Offi-cer, Petty Officer ChloéWhite thought theband’s performance wasexceptional and LeadingCadet Murray, who par-ticularly enjoyed herself,is already looking for-ward to future massedband events where shecan represent the Corps.Unfortunately, even withthe Sea Cadets spurringthem on, the Royal Navywas unable to reverse itseight year losing streak, with the Army winningthis fixture 22-11.Nevertheless it was afantastic event for rais-ing funds for and theprofile of the Sea Cadetsnationally.

During April and May theUnit’s staff was supple-mented by Petty OfficerChris Edge from Maiden-head, who joined us toteach CommunicationsClass 3 to all of the Sen-ior Cadets.Marlow Unit has not hada strong Communica-tions presence for manyyears but it is hoped thatthis course will encour-age some of the cadetsto take it further andeventually instruct it totheir peers.Over the course of fiveparade nights, Petty Offi-cer Edge covered topicsincluding how to sendmessages over a radionetwork, communicatingwith flags and safetywhen using communica-tions equipment. After a short test, mainlydealing with the practicalskills involved in thecourse, seven cadetspassed and wereawarded the specialisa-tion.Our thanks go to PettyOfficer Edge and hisCommanding Officer,Lieutenant CommanderAlan Fleming, whohelped organise this de-tached loan duty.
