On Tuesday 19 February,we had our biannualRoyal Naval Parade. Thisparade was an opportu-nity for the SouthernArea Officer, who is aserving officer in theRoyal Navy, to inspectthe Unit and it forms partof the Unit's annual effi-ciency assessment. This year Cdr GaryBushell RN made hisfirst ever visit to the Unitfor the parade, accompa-nied by the District Offi-cer, Lt Cdr (SCC) PeterPiercy RNR, and DeputyDistrict Officer, Lt Cdr(SCC) David Carter RNR.There were also a num-ber of other VIPs at theevening, including threeMayors of Marlow, Coun-cillors Richard Scott,Doug Anson MBE andRoger Wilson. The evening commencedwith ceremonial divi-sions including a Guardof Honour which gaveCdr Bushell an opportu-nity to inspect the uni-forms of all of the cadetspresent. This was fol-lowed by two evolutionsduring which the cadetshad the opportunity todemonstrate some ofthe skills they had learntover the last year. Thefirst of these demon-strated leadership andteamworking skills whilethe second showedsome alternative com-munication skills by wayof a Boatswain's Call. All those present en- joyed themselves at theevening which was quitealearning experience formany of the young ca-dets and staff. As a result of the eve-ning (and for the thirdyear in succession) theUnit has been awarded apennant in its efficiencyassessment. These as-sessments also coverother areas of the Unit'sactivities from Healthand Safety to achieve-ments in training. The year leading up tothis pennant was atough one for the Unit, with only one uniformedmember of staff for themajority of the time. However with PPO (SCC)Chloé White completingher initial probation andmoving into uniform andthe recruitment of threeother members of staffthings are certainly mov-ing in the right direction.
