OUR "HISTORY"
By
G.A.
Parwez
In the last letter, Saleem, you glimpsed theaccomplishments that comprise the glittering gems
of
ourpast
in
the I
st
century
of
Islamic history. However, to
my
great regret, this same history also includes accounts so vilethat one feels great embarrassment and bewilderment
in
associating them with that blessed era, and one's facelowers to the ground
in
shame and confusion. The truth isthat history can be a double-edged sword; a nationpossessing the true history
of
its past may apply thosepainfully learned lessons to succeed
in
the present and thefuture, but if that nation only possesses a mutilated version
of
its history, then
it
may
become entangled
in
an obscuredarkness bereft
of
the wisdom
it
needs to flourish. Amongstthe reasons for our decline, this, our corrupted history, is
an
important element.With us
is
the book
of
Allah,
the Qur'
an,
uponwhich we
all
have
Jman
(conviction). Based on both factand understanding,
we
believe that
it
is a constitution thatcovers life's every corner and
is
sufficient to establishnourishment
in
an all-encompassing manner for eternity.
We
believe that
if
we follow
it
truly, then we can becomethe most successful
of
nations. But obviously, the Qur'ancan only provide this benefit
if
we understand
it
correctly.The biggest obstacle
in
our understanding
of
the Qur'
an,
however,
is
our mutilated
and
corrupted history. Perhapsthis statement startles and bewilders you, but when
all
thefacts are presented, I hope you see clearly the truth
of
thisstatement. Before I explain this
in
detail, I find
it
necessaryto illustrate through
an
example how a corrupt history can
