Cabling

Most internal connections are made with a ribbon cable. In some cases, the cable will be keyed (fixed in such a way that it will only fit if installed properly) but this is not always true. It is still relatively easy to determine the proper orientation for the cable. Pin 1 of the cable should have a colored stripe, usually either red or blue. In addition, some type of identifier for pin 1 on the board should be stenciled directly on the board. Just line up pin 1 on the board with pin 1 on the cable. Some manufacturers use the twisted cable technique to identify drive selects. When comparing the floppy and fixed drive cables, look for the twist in the cable. If the twist is closer to Pin 1, you have the floppy drive data/control cable. If the twist is further away (when compared) from Pin 1, you have the fixed disk control cable. External cables are even easier. In nearly every case, the connector will be shaped so that it can only be connected in the proper orientation.
